Woman charged with stealing jewelry, striking trooper
By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-HeraldBROADALBIN — A 19-year-old woman is accused of stealing jewelry from her grandmother and then striking a state trooper with her car Saturday in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Brittany Cloutier, of 11 S. Second St., was approached Saturday by Trooper Samuel Thomson of the Mayfield state police barracks after troopers received a call from Cloutier’s grandmother, Beverly Chapman.
Chapman, who lives with Cloutier, said Cloutier stole about $10,000 worth of jewelry from her, according to state police Senior Investigator Karl Meybaum.
Thomson located Cloutier at her home at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, and Cloutier admitted taking the jewelry, Meybaum said.
After entering the home, saying she would retrieve the jewelry, she left through the back door, got into her vehicle and tried to flee, Meybaum said.
When Thomson tried to confront her, Meybaum said, Cloutier struck him with the front bumper of her car. Then, when Thomson tried to convince her to exit the car, she backed into him, forcing him onto the trunk of the vehicle.
Cloutier then fled the scene and went to a friend’s residence, Meybaum said. She was found in a friend’s car in the town of Johnstown about four hours later.
Cloutier was arrested by Trooper Donald Klingbeil and charged with assault, grand larceny and resisting arrest. She was taken to the Johnstown Town Court and sent to the Fulton County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $8,000 bond.
Thomson suffered contusions to his left knee and was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was examined and released. Meybaum said Thomson is not expected to miss work or suffer any permanent injury.
Cloutier is a senior at Broadalbin-Perth High School, Meybaum said. He said her father lives in Texas and her mother is deceased.
Cloutier remained in jail Tuesday, and Meybaum said he expected her to remain there, as her relatives have said they would not bail her out.

Very sad situation in losing her mother so young. One cannot fully understand the difficulties faced by such a young individual and for that one should have mercy and compassion.Nonetheless, many have been worse off and a civil and safe society can exist only by at least a minimum adherence to law and "civility". At 19,"time-out" means a correctional facility, perhaps med-security for a couple years to help her because otherwise it is all down hill from here. One would regretfully otherwise fear for the safety of her and perhaps others. Try to****it at the bud. She is only 19 and can have a fruitful life ahead of her if she is appropriately "corrected" at this time.

she is lucky only to be in jail.. if the trooper thought his life was in danger he could have used deadly force to stop her..people have been shot doing the same thing she did to that trooper..

No matter how much money you have within the family or how many parents raise you you know the difference between right and wrong. She was wrong to take the jewelry and she was wrong for trying to run over a police officer.Being placed in jail is where she belongs. She did a great wrongness. There should be no sympathy for her or anyone that would do anything like this. She stold something valuable and she hurt sombody. It doesn't matter if she's 19 or 90 take the punishment and grow up.Tell me if she had killed that officer would you still think that she should still go to graduation? No you wouldn't you'd all say throw the book at her.

All you weeping hearts need to quit!! My biological mother left me behind a dumpster at 14 months. Yet in still I have never stolen anything, and never hurt anyone else as a means of justifying my early issues. Get a grip, this girl like anyone else needs to be held accountable, and pay the price. By the way I manage several businesses and am working towards a Mster's degree. Even after all that I experienced as a child, my grandmother's jewlerty was always safe in my presence!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wasnt like this at all Brittany has a drug problem. She sold jewlery she stole, she lives with her grandmother and she is a spoiled rotten girl (imo). She might get out of it because of money but I think our great friend the Clouter is going upstate.

It sounds to me as if the Grandmothers jewelry was more important to her than her g'daughter. The article stated Mrs. Chapman lived with Brittany. Not the other way around. A G'parent is not necessarily a Saint. For all we know she owed Brittany money for staying with her. I will wait until I hear the whole story before I will pass judgment on this young woman. If she is about to graduate, I think it is terrible they are choosing to leave her incarcerated & she will miss her graduation day. I will agree her Father is a sap to let her go through this all alone. Yet, for all we know it could be the G'mother has banned him from having anything to do with Brittany. He might have a fight on his hands if he attempts to re-enter her life at this time. She was wrong to steal the jewelry. She admitted she had it. She panicked & she ran. I'm glad the officer was not badly injured. jmo

Losing a parent is a tragic thing. But I think this problem reared it's ugly head well before the mother died from what some have said that know her. The mother spoiled her and then the grandmother. They set her up to expect to get everything and anything she wanted. Apparently she did not know the value of earning your way in life. Yes being a single mother is not easy, I have been there done that. Guess I did something right both of my daughters knew the value of work since the age of 14. I am willing to bet this was not her first time stealing. It should have been stopped the first time she did it. As for hitting the trooper shows she has NO respect for authority. She is where she deserves to be and might get a wake up call. Society needs to stop handing out pity parties for these kind of brats and give them some TOUGH love.

Yes it is sad but regardless of our upbringing we all know what is wrong and right, she made a choice, she knew it was wrong and did it anyway. let her do some time, time to think. Let her see in jail what her life could be behind bars and hopefilly it will motivate her to change her life.

This girl really should grow up, get a job and stop taking advantage of her poor grandmother. I know many people who have had horrible upbringings and still manage to be successful and productive members of society, we need to stop resorting to blaming others for our actions. The poor trooper could have been injured worse than he was, Hello, nobody sees anything wrong with this behavior? Let her sit it out for a few days in jail, it could do her some good.

Haven't lived in Fulton Cty for 20 years now, but last time I was there being 18 qualified people legally as adults. While, at 19 she may not be mature (her actions don't indicate that she is), but she is still an adult and needs to be treated like one. No matter how you parent your children, once they get past early teens, they understand the difference between right and wrong and know what the consequences of their actions will be. Time for a reality check.

Ha ha Lol lol. This is a crazy story. Maybe some time on the inside will do her some good. So many young people today think they can do whatever they want to do and get away with it. Probably because that's how they were raised. Also, my mother died and my father was never up to par. I would still never rob my grandmother! That is no excuse. She sounds like a selfish rotten brat.

This girl wa spoiled rotten by her mother first, trying to fill the void of her father. Being a single parent wasn't easy for her mother who was sick for a LONG time. She treated her mother with disrespect and transferred that to every person she came in contact with. This girl had the world given to her and needs to learn that the world doesn't owe her a thing. She needs to learn that she has to earn respect not take it. She is where a lot of people thought she'd be. I watched her grow up and disrespect all who came across her path. She acted like the evil step-sister, and the more you tried to do for her the more she wanted and took. She was a thief when she was very young. She was getting more and more dishonest the older she got. SORRY folks, no tears from me.

I feel sorry for the girl losing her mother. It is a very tough thing losing someone you love. But her grandparents from what I know were doing a good job trying to fill that void. Even spoiled her rotten so I don't really understand why she would steal from them after all they've done for her. I don't think that her mother dying gives her a "Get out of Jail Free card." Especially since what she did. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. She ripped out the heart that loved her. Anyone who could do that to thier grandparents must be terribly troubled and as soon as she gets out of jail should go to intense therapy. Let me add, I feel so bad for that poor state trooper. He probably didn't even see this coming. Almost getting ran over from a little 19 year old girl. I don't even know what she was thinking. This is going on her permanent record. But obviously anyone who would think of doing any number of things she did, probably doesn't care about that to much.

What this young girl did are all symptoms of a much deeper issue. Her mother is dead, and although we know the father is alive He represents no comforting presence in her life. It is my hope, and it should be all of yours as well, that someone who honestly cares to make a difference in her life will offer her some direction and guidance. It's so easy to condemn without knowing what is really going on in a much deeper sense. "There but for the grace of God go you and I"
