NELLISTON — A two-vehicle accident on Route 5 in the village claimed the life of an Amsterdam man Friday afternoon.
State police said Monday that Charles E. Lawyer, 21, was pulling out of the Lee Publications parking lot at about 4 p.m. He was traveling west into heavy traffic, police said.
Lawyer pulled in front of a pickup truck driven by Bradley Tripp Jr., 32, of Fort Plain. Tripps’ truck broadsided Lawyer’s 1989 Buick on the driver’s side, police said.
Lawyer was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Corner Sue Quackenbush. Lawyer had to be removed from his car by the Canajoharie Fire Department.
A passenger in Lawyer’s car, Dove Stacy, 18, of Amsterdam suffered two broken arms and a broken elbow. Stacy was taken to the emergency room at St. Mary’s Hospital and then transferred to Albany Medical Center Hospital. Stacy still was in the hospital Monday.
Tripp was treated at the scene for lacerations but refused further medical treatment, police said.
The Mid-County Ambulance Service responded to the scene to treat Tripp and transport Stacy. The state police were assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident was investigated by the State Police Troop G and Troop C accident reconstruction team.
They determined the cause of the accident was Lawyer’s failure to yield the right of way, police said. No tickets are likely to be filed in the case, police said.

hey Coachmike...stick to your religeous rants. Those rants make as much sense as your statistics do here. What do those stats have to do with the article. And who was arguing about priveleges and rights? Do you actually read what you write? IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!

I saw the latest statistics stating that: 1. teen females are the most aggressive drivers on the road right now, outdoing the boys for the first time. 2. Older drivers are right up there because of there age and reaction times, etc. 3. teen boys are in third. But none the less, they always say, driving is a priviledge not a right and if your abuse the priviledge your could lose the right or your life in the process.

EXGLOVERSVILLAN there is a reason why they call them accidents. Are young and inexperienced drivers very scarey, yes but no different from when you were young and inexperienced. I am more worried about the 78 year old that thinks the gas pedal is the break.

Being young has nothing to do with an accident like this. I have seen people of all ages do the same thing. They often and unfortunatly misjudge the speed of oncoming vehicles. It can happen at any age.

Young and inexperienced drivers are very scarey. Impatience of youth. There is nowhere that you need to go in THAT much of a hurry to jump traffic. I guess that is a lesson learned with age.
