An inning later, she hit a line-drive single into left field, chasing home Fonda-Fultonville’s ninth run.
The Lady Braves would need almost all of their runs as the Lady Panthers closed a six-run lead to two in Fonda-Fultonville’s 9-7 win Monday.
“I’ve been in a slump for most of my year, but I’m finally breaking out of it and hitting the ball,” Nowak said.
Nowak’s seeing-eye single, which scored Brittany Wilmot with the tiebreaking run, started a Fonda-Fultonville rally. Jen Hulbert followed with a ground ball into the exact same spot, but this time Mayfield second baseman Cassie Christman kept it out of center field, but couldn’t record an out.
JaeDee Lavada appeared to be out of the inning when Amanda Baker hit a fly ball to right field, but it bounced off Megan Thompson’s glove for an error, sending Nowak home and Hulbert to third. Hulbert scored when Mayfield catcher Megan VanNostrand threw a pickoff into left field.
“They kept playing for me,” Mayfield coach Doug King said. “That’s what I was looking for. Wild pitches hurt us. We gave them bases and a couple errors. They played well and hit the ball well. That’s a solid team. They’ve had our number for a while.”
After Fonda-Fultonville pitcher Amanda Baker retired the Lady Panthers in order in the sixth, the Lady Braves continued to tack on in the seventh.
Amy Hitchcock led off with a home run that bounced just inside the left-field line and rolled to the hill deep in the outfield. Wilmot followed with a single to left field and Kayla Ladd’s line drive up the middle bounced off Mayfield pitcher JaeDee Lavada and rolled into an empty spot behind shortstop Ashley Gallt, putting runners at second and third.
“A win’s a win,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Kari Callery said. “We’ll take it for that. Mayfield’s a quality team. JaeDee threw the ball well today and leading up to this game we focused on just watching the ball, making contact and put it into play today, and we did.”
Bridget DeCarlo drove in Wilmot with a groundout and Nowak’s second RBI single gave the Lady Braves (11-6 overall, 7-5 WAC) a 9-3 lead.
“I reminded them of Friday night when we were up by five runs and lost to Sharon Springs,” King said. “I reminded them to keep going until the last out was made. We’ll be ready by the end, hopefully. We’ll get there.”
After Baker retired two of the first three batters in the seventh, VanNostrand singled to center, driving home Rebekah Haschytz, who singled and went to second on a wild pitch, cutting the Lady Braves’ lead to 9-4.
Taylor Miskinis singled into the gap in right-center field and Gallt singled to center field, but the ball went through backup center fielder Chelsey Cooper’s legs and brought Gallt all the way around, cutting the Lady Braves’ lead to 9-7.
“In the bottom of the seventh, they got three legitimate singles and then that error in [center] field,” Callery said. “They would have gotten at least two out of it, but with the error, they got [three], but that’s OK because we played throughout and had enough in there to still walk away with a win.”
Callery brought Kaitlyn Baker in from second base to pitch.
Lavada reached on an error before Thompson popped to third base to end the game.
Both teams got off to a slow start as Lavada kept Fonda-Fultonville off the board for the first three innings.
Mayfield (8-7 overall, 7-6 WAC) got on the board in the second when Megan Thompson hit a bouncer down the left-field line that rolled forever for a solo home run, giving the Lady Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Fonda-Fultonville took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Hitchcock singled to right field with one out and came around to score when Wilmot reached on an error.
Wilmot scored on a wild pitch, giving the Lady Braves a 2-1 lead.
Kaitlyn Baker singled with two out in the fifth and scored on Miskinis’ error at third base.
Miskinis made up for her error in the bottom of the inning when, with two outs and runners on second and third, she doubled into the left-center field gap to tie the game, 3-3.
“Taylor’s been hitting the ball well for us,” King said. “[Baker] did a good job of throwing inside at the kids’ knees, outside and high. She moved the ball well. That was a great game. It was fun.”
