Some in area saw pope up close

A youth ministry group from St. Mary’s of Mount Carmel and Sacred Heart churches in Gloversville sent six teenagers and one chaperone to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers Saturday for a papal concert, complete with a rapping priest.
Ann Marie Simonson, who chaperoned the six high schoolers, said the churches received a notice from the Albany Diocese asking if they would like to be entered into a lottery for tickets to attend the ceremony. She found out the youth group had been chosen only six days before the ceremony. The churches’ Women’s Society, Simonson said, paid for the bus tickets.
“I chose the students by who was the most active and who would be the most receptive and get the most out of it,” she said.
One of those students was Chris Stanyon, a Gloversville senior, who flew home early from a family vacation in Florida to attend the event.
“I was really pleased when I found out I was going. It’s really a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Stanyon said Monday.
Stanyon said he did not expect the ceremony to include bands, singers or “American Idol’s” Kelly Clarkson.
“I was expecting more churchy music,” Stanyon said. “It was really impressive.”
And as for the main event, Pope Benedict?
“It was amazing to be near someone of that magnitude, with that level of power,” he said.
Being at such an event, Stanyon said, brought him closer to his fellow youth group members.
“I think being in that setting, you create a special bond with the people you’re with,” he said.
Mackenzie Marotta, a Gloversville sophomore, agreed.
“It was a lot of fun, and I think I got to know everyone a bit better,” she said.
About 20,000 people attended the event in Yonkers, creating a massive crowd Marotta said she was astonishing to see.
“To see everyone’s enthusiasm was really overwhelming,” she said.
Pope Benedict’s address, Marotta said, was “very touching. He understands young people. He said we affected him, but he greatly affected us.”
Other students who attended the event included Ally Gray, Will Eagan, Dan Wehn and Violet Burkus.
Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato attended a ceremony on the White House lawn Wednesday, where he saw President Bush and the pope address a crowd of about 12,000.
As president of the New York State Sheriff’s Association and a Catholic as well, Amato was chosen by the national Sheriff’s Association to represent the state at the ceremony.
The White House, Amato said, was decorated beautifully for the event. The crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to the pontiff, who celebrated his 81st birthday that day.
“Everything was very well done … you could tell the people feel like [the pope] is a magnet,” Amato said.
Both Bush and the pope addressed the crowd with carefully measured words, Amato said.
“You can tell they were watching what they were saying. They were enthusiastic and positive about the American people,” he said.
The experience, Amato said, was exciting and interesting.
“It seemed like it was a day that had nothing to do with politics. It was just about feeling good about who you were,” Amato said.

And where, pray tell, do you get your "facts," FREEDOM? It sounds to me like you're just foaming at the mouth, ready to assume the worst about anything religious in nature. I don't know where your deep-seated anger toward God and the Church comes from, but I do know it's not healthy. You'd do well to look toward the examples of piety and charity that come from groups like the Sisters of Mercy and ponder what it must be like to have love and compassion in your heart, instead of rage.

FREEDOM: Once again, you spout off without any real facts, and when you lack them, you just make them up. In 2006, Catholic Relief Services spent 94% of its money on programs that benefit the poor overseas. But don't let a little thing like the facts get in the way of your prejudices, FREEDOM.

MrRoboto...first of all the pope is not the holy father..he is a man preaching that man is good when in the bible that man is not good only God is good and that it is possible for man to save himself through another man, when again it says that only through Christ we can be saved -John 3:16- There is no good in the world look around, tell me where it is ? The pope is no representative of God, he is a representation of the antichrist and puts himself up as someone equal to God on earth, the time will come when you will find that the Roman Catholic church is false and I pray that you will see the truth as it really is, centered around Christ and not no man in Italy. Remember it says that, if you are not saved, your deeds mean nothing ,it is written you must be born again, which the catholic church does not teach.

I donate what little i can, carefully. i just dont want to be part of the paying out to victims of abuse. just in 2007 the church settled a bunch of sexual abuse cases in L.A. $660,000. the next paragraph was copied from a catholic website, According to a tally prepared by the Los Angeles Times, the previous largest settlement of abuse cases in the United States since 2002 was the $157 million the Boston Archdiocese agreed to pay to 983 claimants in several different settlement agreements. The Archdiocese of Portland, Ore., agreed to pay $129 million to 315 claimants; the Diocese of Orange, Calif., agreed to pay $100 million to 90 claimants, and the Diocese of Covington, Ky., settled with 350 claimants for $85 million hope kids get some leftovers.

Actually, the Church does quite a bit to help people in the Third World--much more than any other religion, actually. Catholic Relief Services is just one arm of the Church tasked with helping the impoverished and oppressed. It has operations in more than 100 countries around the world. Perhaps those criticizing Holy Mother Church's support for the poor could put their money where their mouth is, and send a financial donation to: Catholic Relief Services 228 W. Lexington St. Baltimore, Maryland 21201-3413 I won't be holding my breath for them to do so, however.

To FREEDOM - The Pope is a human representative of God here on this Earth. Therefore, I can only assume that you believe that God is a joke, too. If you get a chance and are so inclined, check out Luke 6:45 where the Bible says "a good person produces good deeds from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil deeds from an evil heart. Whatever is in your heart determines what you say..." I am praying for you that one day your heart will be changed.

It really saddens me, seeing all these attacks on the Holy Father. He is a man of peace. He has consistently preached a message of hope, peace, love, and understanding among people. Calling him a "joke" shows little more than a deeply-held contempt for everything in this world that is truly Good.

It's extremely rewarding and positive to see the young people of our community attending an event such as this. I hope they bring back what the learned and pass it on to all those in the community!

Im glad I was home praising God the way he should be praised and not the way the pope(man) beleives religion should be taught. No hate intended but just because he has been given the title of pope does not mean he is right about the interpretation of the bible and the proof is by how the people who beleive live. A christian is one who practices it openly by deed not by profession of mouth , one who does not carry his or her profession on ones coat sleeve.
