BF1, in that time frame there was not a wave of immigration was more of a ripple, and those who did were brave souls. You need to read "The Peoples History of the United States" it is a tome of about 900 pages. The answers to your questions are in the first 250 pages (pre 1850)

I was talking about immigrants who came to the American continent in the 1600-1700s. The wave of immigration you are talking about actually consisted mostly of poor, uneducated, unskilled laborers and farmers from Ireland and other European countries. These workers were the common laborers who helped create the US factory system and make us the world's breadbasket. A small percentage were skilled artisans but the majority were the 'wretched refuse' from Europe that helped transformed this country into a world industrial power. Good thing we let them in.

BF1, the majority of the immigrants came to this country in the early 20th century (that's the 1900s for those who don't quite get that whole "century" thing)and most of them were tradesman of some sort (carpenters, machinists, plumbers, et al), and as I said they were proud to become American citizens and contribute to this (once) great country.

YOU, BF1 did not do well in history class

Your ignorance of your own history is astounding. Every one of us is a descendant of people who immigrated to this continent. They came here, took land and resources from people who were here first, and were basically "invaders who only take, take, take". After a period of adjustment, they turned this country into a world power, one founded on principles of freedom, acceptance of those different than you, and inclusion. That's the country I live in.

Can't agree with you more, Drugs. Social Security benefits are now a badge of courage, but scoffed at when I was growing up.

BoB, 15 yrs. ago UA TODAY had a few articles relating o the "new" immigrant population (legal). The question was - will they assimilate to the US culture like the immigrants of the past century (the early 1900s)?? The short answer is a big 7734 NO. The (mostly)European immigrants became proud Americans who proudly learned English, voted, not because it was a privilege but because it is a duty of being an American citizen. Our one beautiful aromatic melding pot stew ha become more like a chamber pot. Diversity and multi-culturalism doesn't work and will destroy the America we all once knew and loved I WANT MY COUNTR BACK

Adkkev, you speak as if you're against LEGAL immigration. The statement on the Statue of Liberty is meant to welcome people to our shores to become part of the American Dream, NOT for a free lunch or to break in and steal what they think is theirs. Ellis Island was meant to keep separate sick, diseased new-comers so as to not infect the general population. Now TB, Polio and other diseases are running across our Southern border unimpeded. Legal immigration is how we grow our Country with people who contribute. This group of invaders only want to take, take, take. They need to stay where they are and fix their own crap-hole Countries and leave mine alone. 'Dreamers' my azz. Criminals is more accurate.

Yes "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore." lets do that, and have them come here legally with the proper medical treatment and not enter because of Obama's promise of immediate amnesty, citizenship!

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore." I guess it's time to have this removed from the Statue of Liberty. Build a wall at both borders, stop all border crossing period, nothing goes in, nothing goes out, no more visas for entry into the US for anyone regardless of what country they are from.

How soon we forget: Lets step into the way-back machine to when the 'one' was immaculated..."Four hundred thousand men and women are gonna go to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, repairing our faulty dams and levees, bringing critical broadband connections to businesses and homes in nearly every community in America, upgrade mass transit, build high-speed rail lines that will improve travel and commerce throughout our nation." That was Obama heralding in his 2009 Stimulus package that every low information voter ate up hook, line and sinker. $900 Billion that was supposed to go for all those Programs for mainly Americas Interstate infrastructure repair were instead sent to the States who used the money to keep Public Employees working. Remember now? I know, so much obfuscation and out-right lies out of this Administration, it's hard to keep up with them.

JEERS to the border problem. We have mistakenly invited the world to send us their children by promising to hand them a free pass to US citizenship. What we basically have done through legislation and talk that all you have to do to be a US citizen is get here Illegally and either be under the age of 18 or be a parent and you will get a free pass with the amnesty democrats are offering. Some are there welcoming the illegals to the US saying we are all citizens and passing out lollipops. This is a dangerous activity that will bring diseases, medical problems and financial burdens to the taxpayers throughout the US. This all is brought to you by President Obama's words and actions as well as his inaction to stop the illegal border crossings. Time to plug the legal holes, return these people to the countries that they came from and to make our border secure.
