Exploration of this concept is absolutely worthy of study. However, given the sometimes dysfunctional nature of recent Common Councils in Gloversville, to allow its members to have sole control over a City Manager to the point of termination could be dangerous. Our wise forefathers crafted a system that stipulated the existence of the three branches of government for good reason. Eliminating that method of oversight by the people deserves very deliberate thought and even more careful action.

Please do not spend all this time trying to restructure our government. Spend the time on working together to bring employment to the area. Work with the other municipalities, work with the Smart Water concept. Spray Nine, MCA, Hussman,Grandoe, St Thomas, Frontier Call Center,to name a few, all sit either underutilized or empty. They sit with infrastructure all around them.Step back and look at the county as a whole. Businesses want stability and unity in government. Please stop fighting and focus on jobs.

This is another way to bring in a highly trained and educated outsider. He would be on the inside of our cities workings and have his hand directly on the taxpayers wallet. He could set himself up very nicely... think Peter Sciocchetti and Jeff Bray. Do we want to go down that road many more times?

We waste our time with these constant distractions. WE elected a mayor already! If you want change, run for office and win. Until then I suggest you get on board with the rest of the team! Time to put your personal feelings aside and start to consider the taxpayers for a change!

Solarguy, why do think all those business' you mentioned left? As for working together to bring employment to the area, in case you haven't noticed, the Upstate prosperity ship sailed out of NYS some time ago.

@Stack....

"Time to put your personal feelings aside and start to consider the taxpayers for a change!"

REALLY ? Like the king did while riding around on the taxpayer's dime for his personal business and his second job ? He did not consider the taxpayers then did he ??

WE did not elect a mayor.......YOU did. Most of us elected a KING apparently.

Obviously the Editor did not read my comments on this subject posted earlier this week. In them I listed the City of Batavia salaries & showed that there are MORE & HIGHER PAID staff than Gloversville presently has. I also mentioned the fact that a Common Council might offer a long-term contract possibly ending in a situation akin to Ms. Laurence's leaving the OESJ School District. Obviously the Editor has a grudge against Mayor King similar to Ms. Wentworth's. Isn't it too bad (for them) they only have two votes between them. At the rate they're going, if Mayor King decides to run again for re-election, they may be the only two votes his opponent receives!

I will now attempt to kill the idea altogether. Let's consolidate & have just one City Manager who would manage both Gloversville AND JOHNSTOWN simultaneously!

Troy and Schenectady once had this form of government. The city manager was always up against a council that was ready to fight with him. The manager serves at the pleasure of the council. I for one think Gloversville with its population (around 15000?) is too small to want to pay a mayor and a city manager. It might be better to change the charter so that the council could bypass the mayor over such issues as appointments which has lead to this suggestion in the first place. Gville has 7 councilman, perhaps 5 or 6 of them could appoint without the mayors approval.

Wouldn't time and money be better spent coming up with a plan to do something about drugs and crime in the city?

Bob, I'm sorry that you don't see any prosperity in the upstate area. We worked most of the Winter in the Saratoga area, which in my opinion is swimming in prosperity. There sure looked like an awful lot of happy upstaters all around us.

While the thought of a city manager sounds good, just look at Fulton County and the ineptness of Jon Stead and the mindless following of the board of supervisors. Stead runs the county, and the incompetent supervisors bow to his bidding. Is this what the voters of Gloversville want?

I see a lot of disagrees to the many posts with valid reasons against this change but only ONE post in support. Gee I wonder where all the disagreers thoughts that support their side are? I know where they belong but their absence tells the truth and value that they possess.

We should be looking at consolidation. Adding new or changing layers of government just compounds the problem with our over bloated government, however, those that are not in favor of decreasing the size of Fulton County Governments and departments must like the high cost of supporting those entities.

Solarguy, I agree with you on this one with a couple of caveats; Saratoga has an excellent infrastructure, Rail service (Quad Graphics built their own rail siding to efficiently and cheaply bring in bulk raw material), Skidmore and Vassar Colleges and of course the Track. FC has a small Airport with a Bakery, Fage, a lot of Lakes and, oh yeah, the APA which limits progress and prosperity.

BoB, and look at what they have done to the downtown business district. Fulton County has 30A while the downtowns rot. The "leaders"(?) put no foresight in trying to bring new businesses to the old shopping districts with rehab incentives or something similar.

Hey MrBob, could you point out where you got the info that "Quad Graphics built their own rail siding to efficiently and cheaply bring in bulk raw material"? I looked and everything I see says it was done with IDA money. That means we, the taxpayers built this rail siding, not Quad Graphics. Please show me where you found that info.

MrBob, "Solarguy, why do think all those business' you mentioned left?"

Now that's an EASY one to answer truthfully, All of those businesses were at the end of their PILOT extended to them by our great "economic Development" setups and they were due to start paying taxes, so they packed up and moved to another economically distressed areas for another 7-10 year pilot and another free ride.

Used, you really cannot understand that post? I do not know how to type any slower for you... but if you do not support the idea of city manager, like most that have taken the time to say then we agree. But there are MANY that disagreed with the posts that are not for the manager idea, where are the "FOR" THE CITY MANAGER SUPPORTERS REASONS FOR THEIR SUPPORT?

My Reason: City managers seem to work. Running a city is EXACTLY like running a big business. and facts show it works if done correctly. exactly like the CEO of a company.

So, with that being said......If you owned a business, would you appoint King Dayton as your CEO? He has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for this city. You'd have to be out of your mind. It certainly can't be worse than what we currently have. Is that good enough for you TOT?

Spray Nine the partnership broke up. MCA they saw the writing on the wall records tapes and DVD were disappearing. Hussman Business sucked and they consolidated. Grandoe and St Thomas they families got old and the industry changed. I do not believe any of those had pilots. Frontier Call Center may have had one but just look at what is happening to Frontier, business is bad and they consolidated to cheaper areas. Yes the pillow factory left in the middle of the night. NY state wasas not then or now conducive to business and business does as business does, they vote with their feet.

Hussman seems to be doing fine...IN AN INDUSTRIAL PARK IN MISSISSIPPI. MCA/Universal/Geffen or whatever they are now called is also still operational just not around here.
