Uncle Sam’s hand heavy

April 21, 2014

At times it seems few in the federal government worry much about enforcing the law. Millions of illegal immigrants are evidence of that....

IRS and EPA -- two arrogant and vastly over-reaching government entities which MUST be brought to heel.

That heavy hand is also in Nevada! Harry Reid has plans for the land the Bundy's family laid claim to over 150 years ago. It is a Harry Reid former staffer that took over as the head of the land management organisation that Hit the Bundy ranchers less than a week into his new job. Harry has been very outspoken saying that this is not over... when will it be over Harry? 150 years ago when the government granted the land to them or after you murder more of the ranchers cattle and bury them on his own ranch land? The government is supposed to represent us, it is supposed to be on the side of Americans and is also supposed to uphold its agreements with everyone that has an agreement. But when you spend everything you can find, you have to look harder than ever before to get what you need to continue... to spend!

Inflation-adjusted federal tax revenues hit an all-time record of $1,428,710,000,000 from the beginning of the fiscal year on Oct. 1 through April 15, the deadline for filing federal tax returns for 2013, according to the Daily Treasury Statement.

In another heavy handed move...

The Treasury Department has intercepted $1.9 billion in tax refunds already this year — $75 million of that on debts delinquent for more than 10 years, said Jeffrey Schramek, assistant commissioner of the department’s debt management service. The aggressive effort to collect old debts started three years ago — the result of a single sentence tucked into the farm bill lifting the 10-year statute of limitations on old debts to Uncle Sam.

I'm not disputing that this may have happened, but I wish that the editorial included some more detailed information.

Looks like the LH cropped the story like Bob likes to do.. This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I'm Scott Simon. Many people expect some kind of tax refund this year. But not so fast. The government's going after old debts incurred by taxpayers' parents that taxpayers usually know nothing about and have little recourse to challenge. The debts are owed to may federal agencies, but the Social Security Administration has found 400,000 taxpayers who collectively owe more than $700 million on Social Security overpayments to family members. They are collecting overpayments to family members .. Some weren't caught for along time but none the less owed .. Sheesh the Leader Herald should be ashamed for this garbage

They are collecting from family members with little or no notification. After confiscation IRS is unwilling to discuss the whys, whats and wheres of the confiscation. In some cases there is no benefit received by the surviving family member. Where is the line? Sorry folk but you lived next door so we can take your money. Heavy handed is right. Due process, what a laugh.

how to avoid this - a little adjustments in your weekly with holdings so you break even at the end...nothing owed and no refund means nothing to confiscate.
