I'm afraid that I don't see the need for this expansion. Why not just enter the woods at the existing trailhead in Benson, what's the big deal? We are avid year round ADK hikers including the 46 High Peaks. The northern region of the Adirondacks was hammered by the hurricane and there are sections of trail that still need attention. For instance Marcy****was washed out and that area doesn't get a few hundred hikers per year but rather thousands. It makes much more sense to me to spend the money where it is enjoyed by the most people.

That's the problem with the 46 High Peaks, mostly around Algonquin and Marcy. They are over hiked. The first day of the Northville Lake Placid trail will put people back in the woods, not the roads. There is a myriad of things to see besides a grand view from a mountain top. The road less traveled is also quieter.

I agree that some High Peaks are over hiked, but many are not. Often in the Winter we see next to no one. Climbing Basin and Saddleback or Haystack or Allen is fantastic. The trails from Tahawus offer plenty of solitude and side adventures that are seldom seen. The opportunities are endless and there are many ways to travel that are well off the beaten path all through the High Peaks.
