Assessors are certified public officials, who have the skills and knowledge of local properties to assess parcels properly. In addition, if you do not like your assessment, you can go through the grievance process, and if that does not work, you can ultimately protest your assessment in small claims court. We have gone through this process a few times, and have had successful results.

Get ready Johnstown. Julius is another tax and spend liberal. Raising property taxes is not the answer. It will only drive a few more of us out. Even if he does succeed in stealing more money from us claiming fairness, those funds will be squandered and our taxes will still go up every year. Sarah come back!

The state of NY makes keeping these properties values up to date a very labor intensive and costly project. It would seem to me that if a locality gets its properties up to full value in a reval, (100%) that if the equalization rate drops, the assessors should be able to adjust the values across the board to bring it back to 100%. Example; if the equalization rate drops to 98%, take the assessed value of the property and divide by 0.98. Any inequaties could be taken care of using the grievance procedures are already in place.

My experience with these data takers they hire is that they hold a brief training program with kids working for minimum wage, pay them mileage for use of their personal vehicle, hand them a clip board, a pen, a tape measure with a form to fill out and charge around $35 per parcel. If there is no one home when they visit a property, the form is purposely overstated what the property has on it, house size, number of rooms, number of toilets, etc to harass their way to get you to let them in at a later date. They showed up at our place, put us down for more square footage, finished rooms, a full cellar when it was partial and 2 toilets when we had only one. They had my grandparents with a fireplace when all it was was a wood stove in my grandfathers work shop in the garage. The council and mayor should insist that truly qualified data takers be used.

The one-third that will go down will be industrial properties, the one-third that will stay the same will be commercial properties & the one-third will go up will be residential properties. It seems to work out that way every time, doesn't it?

We went thru that county-wide reval with those Finnigan dudes. They hired every local neer-do-well republican favorite to poke thru people's houses. They even tried to give our 2 room summer camp 3 extra rooms by viewing it from the road. We made them walk thru it and correct it.
