Tax levy must go down

October 24, 2013

Gloversville Mayor Dayton King deserves credit for proposing a 2014 city budget that carries a nearly 2 percent tax-levy decrease. However, we challenge city officials to cut the tax levy more....

Not true Pards... many people are moving here, easy welfare and also a brand new Kinderhook apartment complex for the low income residents... if you build it they will come. Plus if you legalize pot they can sit out front smoking what they truly want, after selling their food stamp purchases!

That's the point you and many more gainfully employed have left the area. Until their are better jobs in the area this is what will happen. Under the current Federal, State and local environment I do not see anything changing. End result more are leaving.

I am amazed at how much my parents pay in taxes to live in that "city". I pay less than $200 more a year to live in a beautiful neighborhood in a way larger house with more land, services, and local businesses... and yes, I still live in NYS.

Funny mayor king thinks that a 2% tax decrease is great but when he put out his first budget it contained a 9% tax increase, so what has King really done for the city tax payers. Then when the city was given a So called gift of $10,000 from the Kinderhook project he is looking for places to give it to, well how about using it to repair Northern Terrace that the Kinderhook project ruined. The only thing I see that mayor king has done is get his name and photo out in the public.

Seems like a better stunt would be to legalize marijuana and make it food stamp eligible.

Mayor King's 2% tax levy decrease for the 2014 budget is only an election year stunt. Gloversville is the highest taxed city in the state. Gloversville, with nearly worthless properties, continuing to decrease in value, with taxes at nearly $60/$1,000 in assessed value will not benefit from this short-term scheme.

The only outcome is for dissolution of the city and the creation of Village of Gloversville in order to substantially reduce the costly and unnecessary layers of government that have bankrupted the once proud city, together with a long list of poor mayors.

This is the only outcome folks. The sooner this is realized and implemented, the better.

So when a $10,000 gift comes in from a developer, the first action was "who do we give it to" instead of "how can this help the tax payers" makes me suspect.

EXACTLY! But you just know that the powers in charge are going to go ahead and WASTE this chance to help the city by lowering the costs.
