Wah wah I'm the leader herald and I'm a joke..The Herald is a conservative mouth piece and not a good one at that.. Long gone are the days when integrity and truth in reporting were the norm.. The last honest man was Walter Cronkite and sadly the next generation will grow up not knowing that broadcast and print news was once a honorable profession..

The problem is the editorialization of the news by a single news source, a one horse paper in a one horse town. Information is power and so is the control of the flow of information. It used to be the case that the Leader Herald's endorsement for political office was essentially a guarantee for election. Not so today since that web has opened up other sources of information, whether a similar reporting of a story, a contrarian point of view, or reporting information that the Leader Herald chose not to report.

This isn't about selling newspaper since the national trend of print newspapers is quickly declining and like it or not, the future of the Leader Herald long-term in not bright since information now is readily available from other sources. Paper's used to stand on their reputation for honest and factual reporting. Today, that is not the case. What sells is sensational journalism. Also, the key is the first to have the story. A local newspaper is not the best forum.

No wonder the papers reporters are not getting the access to news worthy events might just be something to do with how the paper does its job. Look are the online version of todays news and you see only two news stories and no new news in brief and no letters to the editor or editorals. As of 1;30 PM

Portnoy, Agree with you. but the Democrat Party leaders don't seem to want to challange the Republican party candidares. The chairman of the Democrat party has sat on his duff sense he became the chairman and not done nothing to get committee people in most of the towns in the county and when a democrat does step up to run for an office the party chairman refuses to help that candidate in any way shape or manner. And as far as Stead is concerned he is the highest paid non elected county employee and he leads the BOS around by the nose because the people who become the chairman of the board or vice chairman are just to lazy to do their job.

Seperate from this editorial being a "life isn't fair" rant, IF members of one local media weren't allowed access but noted other members of media were, the who what when why and how of the scenario should be completely exhausted. Who was it, what were they doing, when, why were they there and how did they get access?

Maybe an entirely new, racy story could be uncovered. That zoominfo website was an interesting read. May the arm of power be abusive no more.

There's a photo floating around of a shirt that has the official FCSO logo that says "Press" and "R. Lorey." Did the supervisors create an official press position for the department? If not, then that's fraud right there, and some proof.

RIchard, your correct how ever after hearing so much about this individuals actions should not the supervisors start talking with the Sheriff and why is it that the DA can not or will not start an investigation into this situation. I agree that people who have seen these things happen will not come forward and file charges or be willing to testify because they are scared of the retaliation from the members of the Republican party officials

We hear Ryan this, and Ryan that, yet no one comes forth with proof, and willing to testify. Supervisors,& the DA have to obey the rules of evidence, just as if they were in court!

Jim Bob1221, Your absolutely right and if Ryan was not the son of a prominent Republican Elected official he would be in jail for some of the illegal things he has done. But the people here in Fulton Co. that have seen him do things and get away with it are scared of the almighty Republican Party and will not take their information to the state officials. like I have said many times here in Fulton Co. if you have the right name and the Republican party favor you can do anything you want and have anything you want. And yes Sheriff Lorey should be ashamed of himself for letting Ryan get away with these things and what about all the other members of the Fulton Co. sheriffs department are you or anyone else trying to tell me that they don't know what Ryan is doing illegal and did they not take an oath to serve and protect and to up hold the law. I guess they are only willing to up hold the law as long as it does not mean they must step on a elected Republicans toes.

I did not realize it was the Sheriff's son running that Facebook page. I deleted his friendship once I found out. I can't understand why everyone hates himw so much, until I googled his name. www . zoominfo . com / p / Ryan-Lorey / 364563504

All I can say is WOW, this guy should be in jail for some of this stuff, not running around crime scenes with a camera. Shame on you Sheriff, reel your kid in!!

I was blocked by Mr. Lorey because I wanted to know who was behind the Facebook page. For people who like to protect their anonymity, we don't like to subscribe to sites who don't explain who they represent. We should always be aware of what we subscribe to on Facebook and the internet. Kudos to the Leader, with whom I've been a critic.

This goes along with my "jeers" post on saturday. I am sure the reporters were not intending to take a picture of a body and publish it, nor were they so ignorant as to expect names before next of kin were notified.

Ron Lorey has mental issues. I seen him driving in a patrol car from the scene of the drowning at Broadalbin boat launch. And his page had a web poll asking who you would rather see reporting on Facebook his Fulton County page or Rick Morrison regional reports. Anyone who voted for Ricks page got blocked and deleted. I can personally give five names of people I knew it happened to and I'm sure there are many more. The more people support his delusional behavior of him being a Wana be cop and reporter the more*****keep up this mental behavior.

I agree with the assessment of the situation written in the editorial. Government and law enforcement agencies have historically held back information in an effort to cover their own asses. The more information that is put out to the public, the better for everyone involved. We saw how this instant news phenomena helped in the Boston marathon bombings. The collective mind is much more powerful than a few biased individuals.

"Come to think, I'd just as soon not have a relative's dead body lying in a field show upon the front page of the Leader. How about you?"

But it was fine to see it on Lorey's Fulton County page until he took it down wasn't it ?

I am a friend of Fulton County and Beyond and I can tell you that he DID NOT get information that was not given to anyone else. As a matter of fact, the reports he gave on facebook came from the Leader Herald! His information was what he could gather from the parking lot of Granny"s Ice cream stand. This was a horrific accident and not one that our police officers see's on a daily basis. It was emotional for all involved. How and where they would find bodies was uppermost on their minds, yet they knew that no cameras should be allowed at the time and they really couldn't tell you what they had yet to find.

@Ron you need to go to Facebook page FULTON COUNTY and Beyond. Gloversville and Beyond is a chatroom I believe. You have to look in the right spots to see the right information. He may have taken some of the photos down - he does that if anyone calls him out. Don't mean to be harsh.

GiftBasketGuy, If I were the reporters that were there and were denied access to areas that Ryan Lorey was given access to I would be at the next BOS meeting and create one large problem by speaking at the public speaking portion of that meeting and make this a real issue. And I would also bring them both up on charges. But for some reason that more than likely will not happen because they are afraid to rock the boat, or stir up a problem with the great Fulton Co. Republicans.

Rictator, If what your saying about the sheriff allowing his son access to areas that you and the leader herald reporter was not then why don't you and the leader herald reporter not file charges against them both and you claim, that Ryan Lorey was there under the guise of Gloversville and beyond so please tell me when Gloversville and Beyond became a news agency and I have not seen those photos that he has taken on that website.

I've seen The sheriff's son prancing around these news scenes like he really is a reporter with his faked up press pass and the shirt with the FCSO on it. He has a FB page, that doesn't make him a news reporter.

Sounds like to me that Fulton County Supervisors needs to put forward an ethics inquiry on Sheriff Lorey and what financial money his son made in selling photos to national news outlets. The Sheriffs office was well aware of the owner of the plane early on and knew it was national news story. Completely despicable, but par for the course with a power hungry, camera mugging buffoon like Lorey.

@Ron I was present at the incident and was threatened with arrest along with the Leader Herald Reporter. We were assigned a spot to stand and then a Deputy ordered us to move to another. The problem is that access to the site was granted to the Sheriff's son Ryan Lorey under the guise of Fulton County and Beyond ... posted pictures from areas other news reporters have been denied access to ... Mr. Lorey is a self proclaimed photo-journalist with no formal training or professional work experience in the area. The Leader Herald reporter has two decades of solid experience under his belt. I have directly or indirectly been providing news coverage in the area since the early 1980's and currently broadcast news programs on two radio stations - WCSS 1490AM Amsterdam and WYVS 96.5FM out of Speculator and soon WKAJ 1120AM out of St. Johnsville. I enjoy a cordial professional relationship with every other law area enforcement agency.

There are reasons why reporters are not given information and allowed to take photos at crime and accident scenes. Most are for the reason the next of kin have not been notified and the authorities don't want the families to either read about their family members or to see their pictures on the front page of the news paper. As to the other people being allowed to get information than the newspaper reporter just may have been officials from other law enforcement agencies that need the information or photos that the reporters were not given access to. So before you go off half cocked about this action by the sheriffs department you should first find out the facts all the facts.
