When are our elected offiials going to start doing their job of protecting and serving the public. I agree that if what they claim about Mr.Betz proves to be true it was wrong of him and he should be held accountable. But this BS of bashing one person for doing something thathas not yet been proven while others are walking around scott free, does $3 plus million, how about the $100,000 reported missing from the Glversville Socker Club sound familier. Those that did thes things are praised by our elected officials and the local media. No one will take the bull by the horns and make these people be accountable for what they are to reportedly done. Why? Then to add insult to injury the general public of Fulton Co. will run right out and re-elect the same people back to office.People claim they want honest government but they refuse to do anything to change it.

What about all the welfare fraud out there ? These people are stealing millions from the taxpayers ! The few that are caught get their name and picture in the paper and all is forgotten? What about the rest of the millions out there? What about all the people collecting disability that really aren't disabled but have found just the right doctor or have self inflicted disabilities that they won't do anything about Once again who do you think are paying millions for them? C'mon a coffee pot?

Yes it has to be someone that does not want Mr Betz working there any longer. A misunderstanding of this size should have been handled in the office, not in the courts or even the press. Someone has a personal reason for wanting him out.

This is not about elected officials, voter apathy, or social services, this is about small town politics making a mountain out of a mole hill. Fulton County is rich with history and Peter Betz has done so much to keep history alive. I'm saddened that this issue could not have been resolved privately but just puts another bruise on Fulton County. My association with Mr. Betz has been honorable and I hope he continues his historical pursuits.

If I write a article for the LH occasionaly, does that mean I can get away with larceny? If you paid him to do work on your home, and he stole YOUR coffee maker, would that be ok as well? What kind of message does that send to others? Nice guy or not, STEALING is WRONG!

annarondac, So you don't want your elected officials to hold their appointed people or their other elected officials to hold the wrond doers accountable. As to voter apathy is what is allowing the elected officials to just look the other way when the big theifs steal big money and just run over some one they really like. But I see that you just don't care as long as it does not get into you little corner of the world. A crook is a crook and they shold all be held to the same standard, but here in F.C. it has always been about who you are or what political connections you have.

If he's convicted, he should be fired or quit. Simple. I'm tired of there being no fear factor in the public eye anymore- nothing seems to be unacceptable. Set an example and can this guy if he's convicted.

And how dare the LH try and sugarcoat this and make it seem like it's no big deal.

Portnoy, you and others need to stop with the argument that just because you suspect other things are going on that other things can go without punishment.

If those other things are brought to court as well, then guess what- we'll have the truth come out just as this. So go ahead and file your complaint with the police instead of just talk about it online.

Let me remind people here that in the United States, you are innocent until proven guilty and that is the rule of law. As far as I understand, there has not yet been a trial, so Mr. Betz is innocent.

Annarondac, correct- innocent until proven guilty. I also do not believe there is a mysterious '$3 million bonus' Portnoy is talking about, nor a 'soccer theft.'

Peter Betz has shown great character over many, many years of service. This is it appears, a warlock hunt! There is something "rotten in the state of this affair". It is shocking to see the media rush to put his picture up like he is a terrible criminal. Hopefully, he will have good legal advice and this will pass. It is absurd that this has gone this far.

I hope this is a PR gimmick to revive the old Gary VanSlyke/Peter Betz cable tv show and move it to Thursday night. I for one really enjoyed it, the music and playful buffoonery. It was our local version of Hee-Haw. On the dark side, perhaps he was driven by a caffeine addiction or a need to protest the high price of K-cups, the true ripper-offer. At least we learned that it is not illegal to use part of your budget, dedicated to fight crime, to buy a coffee maker.

We're being robbed every minute of every day by Albany and the focus is on a lousy coffee pot and a County Historian. Let the guy have his coffee, I'll pony up for the donuts.

taxtired, not to mention the incredible amount of waste those single-serve k-cups add to landfills. all that plastic just piling up.

I'll never buy one of use one. I just refill the mug my alma mater sent me for donating some $ or the thermos I got on the cheap at Eddie Bauer about 6 years ago!

MrBoB51, it's not an issue of going after one guy but not the other, so stop trying to make it that.

It's an issue that you and others in the area have wherein there is no 'fear' factor. Nothing seems to scare anyone out of a vote for someone. Amsterdam once had a convict serve as an alderman! But that's okay. A former police officer accused of stealing equipment for his personal business. Then gets elected! That's okay. A former sheriff's deputy rear-ends an elderly couple, allows girls who show their breasts to get out of tickets, uses his personal vehicle to make traffic stops, and shows p-ornography to a staffer- and gets elected and the appointed to municipal positions! That's ok!

Why is it okay? 'Oh, because he may have messed up one teeny tiny bit, but that's ok because he's actually a nice guy and mows my lawn and goes to church every Sunday...'

Good grief, give me a break.

See, MrBoB51, this is where your argument fails. You continue to say 'A' is fleecing 'B' while you make the ridiculous and foolish argument to no end that just because this guy is alleged to have stolen a coffeemaker valued at $125 that people who commit crimes of a greater value are more 'important' so this guy should be left alone.

Say what do you if 100 of these guys stole $12,500 total worth of coffeemakers (or anything for that matter), each suspected of 'stealing' $125 worth of merchandise or equipment, versus one guy accused of stealing $10,000?

My guess is that the second guy makes the front make of the paper, while the others get editorials written about how they're actually really nice and charming people and that they should be granted leniency.

Only a liberal would take an incident in a small county in upstate NY and turn it into a huge deal... multiply the problem times a hundred and turn it into something to prove that progressives are on the side of the common man? You lost me at "this is where your argument fails"! Lets exaggerate this once again shall we? In simple terms, this is not and should not have been news.
