usedtolivethere, funny because I was going to say just 'democratic republic' as my teachers and processors after had always taught me, although the 'federal' does imply the separation between the federal gov and the states. A lot of people, such as drugs and taxtired, misinterpret 'federal' to mean one central government.

You're all wrong. We are a democratic republic. Which means that we democraticaly (by majority vote) elect people to represent us...which is a republic. We are not a pure democracy, which would mean that we have majority rule on all subjects. No need to chastise anyone over this...we still live in the greatest country ever

drugsrus, 'democracy' is the ONLY element of a government like ours. I'd venture to guess we're more of a 'federal democratic republic'.

and taxtired, you probably don't know this because you don't really know your US history very well as it relates to the Constitution, but there was a time in US history when representives to the Senate were NOT elected by popular vote; rather they were elected by the House of Representatives. The 17th Amendment changed that.

So by this, you can say that we as a country have actually become MORE democracized. You probably wouldn't agree, but that's too bad since this is a matter of fact not open to your backward interpretation.

What would you say to that?

swizzer - you really didn't do well in your history class did you????

"The United States is the world's oldest surviving federation. It is a constitutional republic, "in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law".

taxtired, none of the examples you provide make any sense, probably because the Constitution doesn't dictate that. The Constitution says the President nominates Cabinet and SCOTUS justices. You loaded your argument by using examples that you KNOW can't be argued with.

Again, just because we don't elect ALL positions of government, does NOT mean the US is not a democracy. That would be more along the lines of a total democracy, but we live and are governed by a blend that would also include republican features as well.

rs How about people being appointed in very high government positions. Did you get a vote on the Supreme Court Justices?? How about the F.B.I. directer. Lets not forget the directer of homeland security just to mention a few.

drugsrus, the US is a democracy. No one said it's ONLY a democracy, as clearly it's only one facet of our government. In its purest form, a democracy is a government by and of the people, as in elections by a vote of the people.

So please explain to me how the US is NOT a democracy. I really would like to hear your explanation of instances where elections are not had for running the government.

usedto - so, we're a democracy??? You need to check your history and the FACTS. Even as you have said - you are entitled to your own opinion sbut not your own facts - Like them or not- facts are what they are.

taxtired, the CIA World Fact Book is a global standard for facts just like the one you're debating. I'm not quite sure how much more clear it can be, although I'll just chalk it up to your inability to accept facts that do not cater to your handicapped agenda.
