The number of Americans designated as "not in the labor force" in February was 89,304,000, a record high, up from 89,008,000 in January, according to the Department of Labor. This means that the number of Americans not in the labor force increased 296,000 between January and February.

Usedtolivethere, little off topic but... Did you know after paying in all your life by working if you or spouse recieves SS/Disability and they die befor the end of the month (even 2 days) SS tells the surviving spouse that your loved one"should have waited till 12:01am of the first day of the next month to die and you do not get the disability check for the month they were alive in - no prorating! Just a little disgruntled, Congress has it set up thiss way

This is merely another attempt at Free Market control, trying to establish 'equal outcome' where there is none. The same goes for Education, wealth or any other individual pursuit. I don't accept any of the premises' in the min. wage argument because someone saying something is good or bad does not make it so, flowery statements and promises that sound good but can't be kept are the hallmark of Progressives everywhere. Keep your eye on the ball or it hits you in the eye...every time.

LH is wrong again. Neither a minimum wage nor Social Security is an entitlement. They are both earned, not given to you. I was about to congratulate the editors on a true bi-partisan editorial and then I came to this part. I guess they couldn't help themselves.

Gradual increase makes more sense, don't forget the "Snowball effect" if it is done in one full increase... You have those making $9 an hour now, you raise the minimum wage to $9 those people are now making the same as a new employee, not fair, they want a raise. Most small businesses can't absorb the increase and someone will be laid off. Just the $1.75 an hour increase for an employee from $7.25 to $9 based on 40 hours a week is an increase per person of $3640. a year, now you have other employees who want the same raise so they are not making the same as a new untrained employee and so we have the "snowball effect". It is hard enough with the gas, electric and food prices going up for the small employer to keep their current employees, no one wants to get laid off because the Gov't says a big MW increase all at once is good for you!

I generally agree with the editorial perhaps with a few variations. I do agree that indexing should not be part of the plan, as the editorial stated it is too much like entitlements like SS. I might add that it is also too much like the triborough amendment that guarantees teachers raises automatically even though budgets might be too tight to allow them.

and part of the problem is greedy, cheap employers who see the minimum wage as a benchmark. IF employers hired the employees they need and paid them what they are worth, we wouldn't need a minimum. Many employees are like low information voters, they have no clue what they are worth. And of course there are those who aren't worth the minimum. It is a tough and sad situation - most employees do just enough work so they don't get fired and most employers pay just enough so they won't quit.

part of the problem with free market wages is that there will always be someone who will do it cheaper, maybe not as well, but cheaper. Nobody looks at quality just price. Most people have standards. When I was in the job market employers always wanted to know how much I wanted for a salary. I usually asked in return how much the job paid. With things unknown, one of us was about to get the short end of the stick. He may have been willing to pay more than I asked, or maybe I asked more than he was willing to pay. It is a compromise. I once had an employer ask that question and my answer was that he couldn't afford that. I told him to make me an offer - I got the job.

Consider this. No matter what the minimum wage, there will always be those at the bottom of the ladder. Their lifestyle will always be relative to the lifestyle of those making more. They will always be at the bottom until they do something to get off the bottom. As long as the government enables this via its social programs, these people are content to stay there.

The only way to get these people off the bottom is to make everyone get the same pay. Never going to happen, accept it and move on. The Minimum Wage does nothing to help anyone in this country. It helps people in other countries as jobs go there; either moved there by corporations (10%) or moved there through the purchasing habits (90%) of Americans.

Many businesses are not just running on narrow margins. Even without an increase in minimum wage we see prices increased in order to gain greater profits. Just look at OIL and GASOLINE prices. Record profits garnered by oil companies. Wages have not kept up with the increased cost of living and minimum wage has 30% less buying power at its current level than in past decades. Something needs to be done or the property owners will be funding more welfare.

There is another way to get an even better outcome. Let the wage be set by the demand for employment and ability to provide the service. The better you do the job the more you make and if an employer decides that he has a job that a less than optimal employee could handle he could give that job to an individual for less money so that could actually make a bit of money that they would otherwise not have gotten. Minimum wage is a driver to inflation. When it goes up the value of the dollar goes down and prices have got to reflect the changes in costs. Or we can wait for the liberal plan where the employer stops making money and pays for everything out of their own very deep pockets... your choice!

Ahh yes, minimum wage. A system that mandates a person gets paid more than they are worth. And to cover the increased cost of employment, the employer charges more for goods and services. In the end, all ti does is make some feel good while accomplishing nothing.

But wait there is more. The cost of living in NYC is twice that of Fulton County. So it stands to reason that the Minimum wage in Fulton County should be half of what it is in NYC.
