With 2008 marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johnstown, it’s time to look at local historic sites that are responsible for much of the tourism important to the economic vitality of the local area.


The most visited historic sites aren’t easily categorized, according to tourism and historic leaders in Fulton and Montgomery counties.


Fulton County Tourism Director Alison Swartz said most people who come to the area interested in historic sites aren’t just interested in one.


“We took a sampling of the 12,000 to 13,000 who came to our visitor center in Vail Mills in 2007,” Swartz said. “What we heard most often was an historic route site rather than a single destination.
