The need for new, clean apartments in the Glove Cities has grown greatly over the years and is one of the main reasons why local economic development officials and others have pursued such housing.
Officials also say more apartment-type housing is needed for the elderly.
The Fulton County Economic Development Corporation has in recent years gotten into developing apartments, most noticeably the Estee Commons apartment complex in Gloversville. The EDC and its real estate arm — the Crossroads Incubator Corp. — have transformed the former Estee Middle School into a 39-unit apartment building.
“We identified housing as economic development.” said EDC Executive Vice President Jeff Bray.
Bray said 35 of the 39 available units at the new Estee Commons apartments in downtown Gloversville are now rented.
