Would lifting gas tax help?
Motorists are struggling with the oppressive cost of gasoline these days. In Gloversville, the cost at gas stations was hovering around $3.75 per gallon Wednesday.
Motorists are desperate for any type of relief. Many probably would welcome a proposal to suspend the state’s gasoline taxes over the summer. Before drivers form an opinion on that, however, we suggest they slow down and think it through.
Supporters of suspending the state’s gas taxes say the measure would lower consumers’ cost. The state Senate has approved the Republican-sponsored legislation, but it faces opposition in the Assembly and from Gov. David Paterson.
The suspension, supporters say, would save motorists approximately 32 cents per gallon, including 16 cents from the petroleum business tax, 8 cents from the motor fuel excise tax and 8 cents from the state sales tax.
