Grand Opening
The Leader-Herald/Kayleigh Karutis
Visitors gather at the Fulton County YMCA at the facility’s grand opening Saturday.
September 7, 2008
JOHNSTOWN — Those who haven’t seen the new Fulton County YMCA were treated to a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the facility at the building’s grand opening Saturday.
Volunteers from Nathan Littauer Hospital, Fulton Montgomery Community College and scores of other organizations gave tours of the facility, which opened last week but conducted a grand opening ceremony with local dignitaries Saturday.
Membership Director Peter Riley said the YMCA has garnered about 100 new members since its opening on August 25.

The Convention of 'Hope' ... er 'Change'
Fri, September 5, 2008 @ 5:18PM
Last week, I hinted that I thought Barack Obama's nomination-acceptance speech was an exceptional bit of political oratory, so you might expect me to follow through now with a reaction to John McCain's speech last night. I'm afraid it wouldn't be fair for me to comment on it, however, because I fell asleep about half-way through it. I'm not saying McCain is old, stodgy and boring, but ... well, let's just say I had a long day at work and I couldn't keep my eyes open. The short biographical film that introduced McCain focused intensively on his experience as a POW in Vietnam. I know this time in his life sets him apart from the rest of us mere mortals and makes him a regular "profile in courage," but the tone of the presentation seemed more grim than uplifting. One scene that must have been an attempt to draw laughs featured McCain's 96-year-old mother calling him a "mama's boy.

No more comments.
Fri, September 5, 2008 @ 3:34PM
On February 12th the new Leader-Herald website debuted. One of the new features was the ability for readers to comment on stories and other areas of the on-line paper. As of today, we have 2,329 individuals who are registered to participate in this feature. As of today we have received a total of 23,021 comments. That is tremendous. We are very pleased to see that, for the most part, readers have taken on the ownership of what is happening in the area and beyond to express their opinions and solutions through this avenue. We have only had a very small percentage of abusers on the site and unfortunately have taken away their privileges. Of course, it is not full proof, or may I say fool proof, and some have managed to return under another name. There are some areas of the on-line paper that we do not allow comments on. Obituaries being one. As of today, I have also made the decision to exclude comments on the letters to the editors. The reason is simple.

The Big Apple Sports Birthday Blog for September 7
Sun, September 7, 2008 @ 7:59AM
The Big Apple Sports Birthday celebrant for September 7 is the former New York Knick and NCAA Championship winning coach, Al McGuire, born in the Big Apple, in 1928. I liked everything about Al McGuire. His knowledge of the game of basketball, his unbelievable ability to use metaphors to describe both action on the court and life itself, the fact that he sat on the bench crying after his Marquette Warriors won the 1977 NCAA championship, how listening to his commentary could make even a blowout or poorly played game entertaining. McGuire and his broadcasting partners, Dick Enberg and Billy Packer, changed the way college basketball games were presented on TV and that change helped the end-of-the-year NCAA Tournament evolve into March Madness. Before he became a Coach, McGuire was a pretty good player in his own right. He had a strong career at St. John’s University and then played for the Knicks from 1951-54.

The Village people and the YMCA
Fri, June 20, 2008 @ 8:26PM
Historically speaking the YMCA in its current form has a hotel-like atmosphere, and the referenced zoning ordinance that was used to classify it as such is probably as old or older as the YMCA itself. Since the inception of residence in 1844 the YMCA it has been described as “hotel-like” as far as providing rooms or residency, mainly for single males, providing a Christian based alternative to a lifestyle of gambling, whiskey and women. At one point in the 1940’s the YMCA had more rooms (100,000) than any hotel chain in existence at the time.
