FM’s Perrella Gallery to Host New Exhibition
January 23, 2013 - Mohawk Currents
JOHNSTOWN — The Perrella Gallery at FMCC will feature a new exhibition of work by Amsterdam artist Michael Davis entitled “21 Grams of Depression; a Visual Diary of Coping with Depression.”
Davis explores his struggle with depression through what he calls “a visual diary of images, channeled from within.” The exhibition features many large scale computer generated word designs and color prints that Davis has created over the past several years as a means of emotional healing.
“The images included in this exhibition are very intense. Davis’s work evokes both the genuine inner pain felt by those suffering from depression, as well as a sense of transcendence that allows him to give meaning to his burden,” said Joel Chapin, Perrella Gallery director.
Davis has worked with digital design since he graduated from FM in 1999 and works as a graphic designer. This exhibition will be the first time that Davis has exhibited his work publicly.
“There are many examples of famous artists, musicians, and writers throughout history that have been haunted by depression, many have been driven to create by it, and many have been ruined by it,” said Chapin. “Davis’ work in the exhibition is courageous and cathartic, and will help viewers understand what depression sufferers go through and may be inspired by the healing process of creativity.”
An artists’ reception is scheduled for Friday, January 25, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Gallery, complementary refreshments will be served and the public is cordially welcome.
Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with extended hours until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday or by appointment; closed weekends and holidays. For further information call 736-FMCC (3622), ext. 8977 or ext. 8879.
