To Appreciate Life

June 28, 2011 - Curdie Gardner
Yes, this is my topic of discussion today on my blog. I think noone does this these days, as they lead hurried, inane lives to satisfy their shopping needs, or whatever needs of the day. As some of you know, I grew up in a whole different world, the one of having an appreciation of life.

We never joined forces with the world of shopping, or shoppin, as my father refers to it! Our family grew everything, raised our own meat, had our own cows for butter and milk, harvested a huge garden, canned everything, and basically only needed the basics in life at the wholesalers twice a year! Yes, that was all and wow, was that a shopping trip for me!

Since I was fairly young at the time, I was an awe of everything in the big city;you could say I was taking it all in. But I know my parents dreaded the trip in to the big city, for many reasons, but I think mainly because the area was so ugly and depressing. There was noone even caring what was around them, they were just "shoppin" away! I took it all in, the big buildings, the deli with the olives everywhere, the rambling streets, the smokestacks, and the biggest of all, was the trip in.

I remember thinking that this was beauty to some that we were passing, but the mountains, the deserted towns, fallen down buildings, smokestacks, closed stores, and more, was not beauty to me at the time. But that is how I got to have an appreciation of life around me. I now look at all things around me including: the sunset, farms, deer running, trees changing, a rabbit going across the road in front of me, the little child asking for ice cream politely, the Amish working the land, and the list goes on and on.

Sometimes I catch myself forgetting to notice things and instead I am wrapping myself up in idiotic things of the day, like someone not using a turn signal, a mad driver, an impolite person at the checkout, a waitress with a bad attitude, and, well, the world around me. Well, that could be in a book, maybe my first one, but today I will limit this rambling to appreciation of life! So, the next time you are making your way to Price Chopper, say hey, let's take a slower pace today and go somewhere else.

Since I run two farmers markets, I would suggest you go there! Here is a partial list of what we carry: we now have honey in Johnston, along with goat meat, beef coming soon, bakery goods, raspberries slowly coming in, greens, lettuce, radishes, beets, , crafts, and lots of plants! But as the season goes along, we have more, don't worry! One can really make a meal of things just bought at the market, so come on over and give us a whirl!

You can sure appreciate life while you are at the market, as you get to purchase all locally made and grown products from the area. All vendors have to only bring their own products, so you can be sure there is nothing from Mexico or California at the markets! No local shop could say that.

Just follow our website and you find all of our locations! Like us on facebook under the same name and be sure to appreciate life! Happy shoppin!

So sorry you did not see the sign on the fence where the market has moved to. the market is now on 465 North Perry, that is right in front of the Lexington bus garage, near Daisy Lane and Perry Lanes. Keep track of the markets by facebook or ****fultonmontgomeryfarmersmarket**** Pretty simple

Personally, I've given up o where the J'town farmer's market may be hiding. It was in a very accessible place and now it' not. I'll put some tomatoes in pots and wait till it comes back to where it was.
