| | Adirondack photography guru to appear at FMNovember 4, 2010 - Bill AckerbauerI'm passing along the following item, which appears in today's print edition, for the benefit of readers who are interested in all things artistic and/or Adirondack. Carl Heilman II is a major figure in the culture of the Adirondack region. I interviewed him back in 2001, when he was the guest artist at the Fulton County Art Show. Here's what I wrote about him in an article published May 4, 2001: "Heilman's work conveys in vivid color the same emotions one might experience in first-hand encounters with wilderness: from the calm of a bog shrouded in morning mist to the exhilaration of reaching a mountain summit. An Adirondack guide, Heilman has lived at Brant Lake in Warren County since the 1970s, but he claims no single area of the 6 million-acre Adirondack Park as a favorite location for shooting. Where does he seek subject matter? 'Anywhere that's wild, so that opens up a lot of the park. I enjoy the High Peaks, but the more I've traveled around the foothills and the bogs and the waterways, there's just endless opportunities for photography.' And now, the details on Friday's event:
Noted photographer to give presentation at FMCC
JOHNSTOWN — The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network will host “I Am the Adirondacks,” a multimedia presentation by photographer Carl Heilman II, on Friday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. “The intent of the program is to evoke a sense of our being part of the wild, natural world,”?according to a news release from SVAN. “Going into the wilderness is about leaving the everyday behind and being absorbed in the flow of nature. It is about venturing into the spectacular and finding wonder in the details.” Heilman has photographed the Adirondacks for more than 30 years. His most recent book, “Contemporary Landscape Photography,” was published in June by Amphoto. Heilman helped produce “The Wild Adirondacks,”?a digital panoramic presentation shown daily at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, and he has appeared on national and regional PBS?programs about the Adirondacks. He was the featured guest artist at the Fulton County Art Show in 2001. The 7:30 p.m. presentation in the college theater will be preceded by a reception from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Heilman will signs copies of his books and posters after the presentation.
