Music at the Market

May 29, 2010 - Bill Ackerbauer

As a folk-music hobbyist, as opposed to a more "serious" sort of musician, I tend to play more on my front porch or in backyard-barbecue jam sessions than in front of large audiences. Every once in a while, though, I get chance to pick and grin in a public setting, which is great because it gives me a chance to share some of the obscure, vintage music I love with people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to hear it.

This morning, my buddy Roland Vinyard and I (we call ourselves "The Bentwood Rockers") visited a local radio station and went on the air to play some old country and blues tunes. It was tons of fun and a nice chance to promote our next gig, which happens to be this Saturday morning (May 29) at one of my favorite venues — the Gloversville Farmers Market. We'll be there from 9 a.m. to noon. Something about the combination of fresh produce and handmade acoustic music just speaks to me.

Check out the calendars in the box at right to see the musicians and other entertainers scheduled at the market this month and next — it's a nice mix of local talent.

(To hear a sample of what we sounded like on the radio this morning, click the music player below or use the link in the box at right. The tune is "My Creole Belle," which we learned from the recordings of Mississippi John Hurt.)
