Thank you, Mrs. Wilson

April 7, 2010 - Bill Ackerbauer

From time to time, I get encouraging messages from readers about "Remember When," the vintage photo feature that we run weekly in Sunday's Leader Extra section of the print edition.

Most recently, I received a nice note from Lise Wilson of Johnstown, who recognized her husband and two other city officials in the "Remember When" photo we published March 21. (See the photo at right.) The photo negative, which I dug out of our ponderous archives, was labeled only "March 13, 1968 — Johnstown High School students run City Hall for a day." No names were recorded.

Mrs. Wilson filled in some of the blanks for me: “The city officials were City Clerk Harvey Mansfield on the left, Mayor Peter S. Wilson in the middle and City Attorney George Lang on the right.”

The names of the boys — who now must be men of about 60 — remain unknown. (If you recognize any of them, kindly let me know.)

We're always appreciative of feedback from readers, and I'm grateful when someone writes in to help us identify people who appear in “Remember When.” Mrs. Wilson’s note was especially welcome because it helped me “Remember When” — not 1968, which was before I was born, I hasten to add — but a time about 10 years later, when she was my second-grade teacher at Jansen Avenue Elementary School. And a great teacher she was. That era seems all the more distant and idyllic now that the school has been closed.

Thanks for everything, Mrs. Wilson. I look forward to hearing from you again.
