A sports fan

March 22, 2010 - Pat Beck
74% of readers read local sports in their local paper, so a study by the National Newspaper Association reports. I believe it and my beliefs are reinforced anytime we “don’t” cover a game or a particular sport. The Leader-Herald Sports department covers a minimum of nine school districts, a community college and everything in-between. And does an excellent job. A job that I will hold up for comparison with any other local newspaper or paper our size and we would win the championship recognition. So, why are there such a small amount of comments on these stories? Young athletics that show self-discipline, sportsmanship, right along side their individual athletic abilities. It is difficult to understand, why no one comments on a young man, Giuseppi Lanzi, who in additional to numerous other recognitions, has gone 42-0 in his senior year of competing in wrestling. Thanks to a local native, Chicago Bears’ Josh Beekman, who comes back and takes joy “in going into the school to talk to the kids.” Jim Ellis, your photos were outstanding of the Fonda Speedway line-up. For that matter, Jim, Bill, Paul and Derek you all do a stand-up job! Turk Wendell is coming to help raise funds for the local little league, the Mohawks season is just around the corner and so much more. I am a sports’ fan, a part of that 74% and I am glad to comment on it. Go Wildcats - Kentucky all the way!

Well as a sports fan...a motor sports fan...I see nothing in any of your sports columns to comment to. I went to National sports...to see what anyone had to say about the Keselowski/Edwards incident from yesterdays race and nothing there...surprise. Also, one of the most commented about stories from yesterdays race...the Jeff Gordon/Matt Kenseth incident...and nope...not a thing. NASCAR is a sport...its the second growing sport in the U.S..Jimmie Johnson was voted Athlete of the Year by the Assoc. Press So I guess someone must think NASCAR is a sport worthy of more than a misinformed unresearched blurb in editorials when there is nothing else to write about.

although i love the local sports stories i would still like to see box scores for major league sports. that would give a more complete sports section.

small time sports have no big time scandals. i think once u get into big money and "stars" then opinions and comments fly. im not saying people dont care or enjoy the sport, but theres nothing much to say about it. no dirt.

As a loyal American I consider it a patriotic obligation to watch the Super Bowl and the World Series, but I don't think I've read a sports page since the Giants and Dodgers left New York. The comics aren't much good any more either. What is? Funny doings in Gloversville?
