| | The fat lady has sung -November 4, 2009 - Pat BeckOK, let’s get it out of the way, I fit the description but nevertheless I am not going to sing but the elections are now over. Well, the voting is over, yet the constructive comments and cheap shots will continue for a few days. I will be criticized for our endorsements, our coverage, our website and it won’t surprise me that somehow, someone will feel it was our fault that the voting machines weren’t working. I repeat, the comments are always welcomed and I love the fact that people take such ownership of their local newspaper. My hope is that the answers are at least given some consciousness consideration and the staff is given a little respect that they deserve. Today I was greeted, at a morning chamber event, with “I knew Dayton would win the minute you didn’t endorse him”. I didn’t miss a beat, asking with sincerity if he would please join the editorial board for the next election. He didn’t give me an answer. I opened the following email: I am astounded that you have no online version updated for today, the day after the election. Is there a more important day in the year for news in Gloversville? It was the mayoral election for pete's sake! This is the internet age. Of course, I was able to find out the results of our local election from another source. (the cable news channel, Capital News 9's website) Do you have any wish to prosper as we move into the future? It certainly doesn't seem like it. We do not have a separate online news staff, our staff is not large to begin with, and we are down a reporter. No excuses, just facts. Our major work is dedicated to the print edition. Although we do try and get breaking news on, in a brief form, when it occurs in-between editions of the newspaper. What we do have on our website, that no other media holds a candle to, are over sixty photos that bring a mirror image to a number of local elections – take a look at our CU site. I am very proud of the newspaper you received today. The polls closed at 9 p.m. last night and by noon today, a small group of dedicated newspaper people, covered (actually there, no ripping off from another source) election results from Gloversville, Johnstown, Judgeships, Treasurer, numerous town races, and malfunction voting machines. Oh yes, add into the mix some crimes, positive area happens, major local sports and Captain Kangaroo! Mine is a great job, I love it and give tremendous credit to those who work to get this newspaper out, election day in and election day out. Article CommentsNo comments posted for this article.
