Bill's Broadsides

POSTED:Fri, October 2, 2009 @ 1:08AM

The Fonda Fair of Yesteryear

For those readers who enjoy the Remember When? feature that appears most Sundays in the Leader Extra section of the print edition, I have a little bonus to offer. Space is limited in the print edition — our consciences can only bear sacrificing so many trees each week — but here in cyberspace, I can devote as much space as I like to these photographic trips down memory lane. To wit, I am posting this series of pictures taken by an unknown staff photographer on Aug. 31, 1967, at the Fonda Fairgrounds.

I found these photos in the form of film negatives in our dusty archives. I have arranged them into groups of three, giving them the appearance of flim strips, but that's deceiving — the negatives were each on individual film squares, and clearly some captured better exposures than others. The pictures here are on the small side. You can click on them to get a larger view. Better yet, see them even more clearly at the CU site on the new gallery I've created just for REMEMBER WHEN?

Only one of these shots will appear in this Sunday's paper; can you guess which one? (Hint: It's not the shot of the man smoking a Lucky Strike while perusing the prize-winning ears of corn, though that was my runner-up choice.)

Please don't hesitate to send me copies of your cool, old-timey photographs of local scenes, people and landmarks. E-mail digital pics to me at backerbauer@leaderherald.com, and don't forget to pass along whatever caption information you have to share.
