Speaking of art ...

May 13, 2008 - Bill Ackerbauer
Speaking of art, I see the Tiffany Smith Gallery has a new exhibit on display.

According to a postcard we received May 10, there was a reception on May 9 for  artist William Michael Ruller. The exhibit, called "Visions," will be on view until June 1. One of his paintings, titled "Goddess," is shown inset at right (I brazenly copied the image from his Web site).

Tiffany opened her gallery last year in a former church in a residential neighborhood in Johnstown. I haven't been inside yet, but I plan to check it out one of these days.

I think it's pleasantly surprising that a small, rural, blue-collar area like ours can support any art-related enterprises at all. Folks inclined to indulge their artistic leanings around here have options:

FMCC offers a variety of art courses for academic credit as well as occasional non-credit workshops and classes. Call 762-4651, Ext. 4111.

The Tiffany Smith Gallery, 110 Prospect St., Johnstown, offers classes for children and adults in drawing, painting, sculpture and other media. Call 848-3279.

The Roth School of Art, 45 W. Main St., Johnstown, offers classes for kids, teens and adults in painting, drawing and other media. Call 762-3130.

The Arkell Museum in Canajoharie and public libraries throughout the area host occasional art classes and workshops.

Are there other art-related happenings I should know about? Drop me an e-mail or leave a comment here. I'll gladly help spread the word.
