Still waxing nostalgic

April 9, 2009 - Bill Ackerbauer
Since our recent effort to bring back the "Remember When?" feature, several folks who read the blog have asked me to post all the RW photos online. I won't necessarily do that, because we like to save a good deal of unique content for the print edition of the newspaper.
This blog is a useful outlet for interesting material that doesn't get into the print edition, so if I have something extra to share in the nostalgia/history department, I'll post it here. Also, if I learn additional information about an old photo that has already run in the print edition, I might offer it here (as I did in my previous post and do again here).
This week's RW photo (see Sunday's Leader Extra section) comes from an old copy of the Johnstown High School newspaper. My uncle Pete unearthed several early-1930s copies of the Bugle, which belonged to my grandmother, Alice McGivern Ackerbauer. We think she's one of the young ladies in the photo, but it's hard to tell for certain. At any rate, click on the item in the photo box at right for an interesting nugget that I found in the same issue of the Bugle. It's hard to imagine what Johnstown would have been like before Knox Junior High School was built, isn't it?

The second photo at right is the one that ran in the print edition two Sundays ago, with some additional anecdotal information provided by one of my new correspondents.

A side note: For those readers who are bored to death by local history and find this stuff tiresome, I hereby vow to return soon to blogging about a wider variety of current stuff. I'm just on a nostalgia kick lately — bear with me! With the weather improving, it won't be long till I resume My Great Transportation Experiment.
