| | What's in a song?March 24, 2009 - Pat BeckI am a Good Morning America fan. It is not that I trust them more over another network for news any more than I do John Stewart, who I also am a big fan of, I just like the Diane, Robin and Chris and the areas that they cover. An interesting one today was over song lyrics. Seems Brittany Spears may have a hidden message. In her single “If You Seek Amy” some are saying if said quickly how much it sounds like a certain four-letter expletive. I have to admit it took me a great number of times saying it before I figured it out. Anyway, it brought out this whole story and conversations concerning “hidden suggestions” in songs. And of course, it was said that parents should be concerned. And of course, they should but the list of concerns is gigantic! My thoughts went to why waste time trying to figure out or look for these lewd messages? If you want to be concerned just listen to some rap songs that hides absolutely nothing from four letter words, to having sex to beating the crap out of someone. I love all kinds of music but I hate rap. Didn’t really see why this was a chosen story, but I quickly remembered that many feel the same way about what we print. Anyway, just my thoughts for today.
Article Comments(6)ParveApr-13-09 4:39 PM I guess I am a little late on this one, but I couldn't help but comment, for those listening. Rap music is just as much a form of art as any other type of music, or visual art, for that matter. It just happens to be a bit more "in your face" than classical - perhaps. Hating it only means that you are closed-minded. If your issues are glorification of drug use, I guess books by Kerouac, Burroughs, and Tom Wolfe are all "cRAP" too? Or what about violence? Would that make all those classic western films just as bad? Rappers are describing what their generation and peers must deal with in our society. Born into a low-income family in an urban setting, it's not easy to survive ... It might be tough to listen to, but it is real. Luckily we have freedom of speech in this country. DiscobulousMar-29-09 12:06 PM I'll buy cookies from any Girl Scout who looks like Britney. cruellaMar-28-09 10:54 PM Mrs. Beck, It would have been nice if the people could have comment on Judy M. letter. I think she has a lot of good ideas, But I don`t think we are ready for a trolly at this point! Maybe in the future when we get a downtown again, then maybe a trolly that runs between the twin cities would be nice. DiscobulousMar-25-09 12:31 AM As far as the four letter words go, the level of offense increases when they are used as verbs. teebzzMar-24-09 1:32 PM I love many kinds of music myself. when cRAP music came out, i thought ok this is just a flash in the pan. boy was i wrong. its sure is a sad commentary on a whole generation that create and support this "music". i was trying to figure out what is good in Snoop Dawg ( or whatver his name is ).. i thought... is it the tune?.. nope.. is it the lyrics or message?... nope... is it his good looks? lol.. nope. yet look at the revenue that this genre or entertainment brings in. ohh i figured it out.. its his image.. a lazy , dope sniffing, jewlry wearing guy that features hot tramps, fancy cars and money falling from the sky in his videos that most of his fans can only dream about... and sometimes try to obtain thru very questionable methods. people can make a fuss about sneaky Britney's hidden "shocking" whatever. shes still a girl-scout compared to 99% of those rappers.
