I did it!

March 16, 2009 - Pat Beck
In the recent Cheers and Jeers a reference to Dubai placed the city in the country of India. Not right. Let's see, I could say I was thinking of Mumbai, which is in India. But that would be a cover up. No, a lie because I wasn't. I wrote it and I made the error. Dubai is situated on the northeast coast of the United Arab Emirates. I, for one, will never forget this and can only hope that one night as I spending my half hour with Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy, that the question appears. Alex was born in Sudbury and that's in Ontario and I am pretty sure that makes him Canadian. You can see Russia from there, right? Why do I think I made the mistake. Probably, because there are so many companies and outsourcing of jobs in India from the US, it just seem natural. I apologize, but I will 100% guarantee, it will not be the last time I make a mistake.

perhaps there are so many disgrutled empoyees that she just believes that is the only people who have a negative opinion of this newspaper..makes you wonder how many there are..

Hey pbeck...I noticed you didn't have a jeer for the president on Saturday regarding his "Special Olympics" remark from last week. What are your thoughts on it?

Nice call Smitty..."reckless" seems to be the norm...it's too bad!

Pat Beck's assumption that buckeye is either a disgruntled employee or a public official is way off base. Pat uses the word either which stipulates that only disgruntled employees or a public official have an issue with the LH. It's extremely unprofessional for an Ogden employee to make such a reckless assumption. It is also extremely arrogant. Perhaps buckeye isn't satisfied with the local news content or maybe it was something as simple as the LH not returning his or her phone call. Don't assume because that's when mistakes happen.

Perhaps, like the Invisible Man, they have no identities.

Correction: I meant to say, "why aren't the identities of writers of comments...". Thanks, Smitty, for the backup (if you were backing my comments.)

Extremly good point. Just like the business model failed when newspapers decided to put information out there free on their website, this will bite them as well. There are reputations that are ruined with these comments and we're not too far away from a tragedy that will change the entire landscape of comments.

Just wondering why identify of writers of comments aren't going to be verified in the same way as Letters to the Editor? Studying Journalism and that's my purpose for recent comments and questions.

Disco, I have my Dubai correspondent looking into the cost of gasoline there. I'll pass along his report on my blog later this week. - Bill Ack.

Do you think the good folks in Dubai know where WE are?

pbeck...you couldn't be any further off base! Wrong on both counts. You know the old saying regarding people who assume things! I'm sorry if you have taken any of what I have said personally...it wasn't meant to be. I'm sure you're a very nice lady. I just feel like the LH has become a little too arrogant in recent years. Maybe a lesson is to be learned from this? Let's see.

Mr. Buckeye, I have read your comments enough to know that you will never be satisfied with anything that this newspaper or I do. It is my opinion that you are either a disgruntled former employee or a person who holds public office that has not had the positive press that you feel you deserve. But, as always, you are welcome to express your opinions on my blog or in The Leader-Herald. I love America.

Wow....you really didn't know! That's amazing and it speaks volumes for the state of the LH. Then you take a shot at Sarah Palin...poor taste.

Hebert and Alder sound like real names....a vaudeville team perhaps? At least they must belong to someone somewhere. Personally I never could pass Geography. It didn't seem to matter. After all, I knew where I was, and that's all that mattered to me. I'll bet the folks in Dubai are just happy to be wherever they are. Wonder what they pay for gas.

I stand 100% behind the reasonings given in the Publisher's Point. My phone number is 725-8616 Ext. 303 and I would welcome a call from a Mike Hebert or a Steve Adler to give me the information on authenticity of the letters submitted. As of this date, I have yet to receive any proof that these two individuals exist. Perhaps, you could call me, with your real name and give me the correct information on how you know this this issue was a mistake or a cover-up.

Hey, you're the publisher of a newspaper - you can put Dubai wherever you want to and 99 out of 100 people will believe you. It's the 100th one who passed geography 101 that causes trouble.

And I was hoping for an apology to Mike Hebert and Steve Adler...talk about cover ups and "mistakes"...??
