Publisher's Point

POSTED:Mon, March 24, 2008 @ 11:36AM

A question and an answer..

For some time now, I have been wrestling with the decision of eliminating two of the three pages of stock listings that currently run in our Sunday edition. We would continue to run our daily Market Watch report and the NASDAQ 1000 most active and local stocks on Sundays in the Business section. The plan would be to publish more local, state and national business news on these open pages. Yes, it would also give advertisers more opportunity to reach potential customers. This is a bit of my own personal poll before a final decision is reached. Would this be a good choice, bad choice or do you really not care one way or another?

As long as I am talking about pages in the newspaper, I want to take the opportunity to answer a comment left by a reader on the Cheers and Jeers page.

Comment: JEERS - to this newspaper... for every time they have a full-page advertisement, instead of making the paper bigger, we lose a page of news. Page 4 today, gone. I'm sure you've all noticed it on a Sunday. The Lifestyles section, for example, doesn't expand to compensate for full-page ads so instead of 6 pages to that section, we get 5 or even 4!!! I can see why the department heads in advertisement receive 'awards' every year for their good work. Other papers do not rob their readers like this.

Information: First of all we cannot just add a page to an edition. The configuration of our 6 unit Goss press will not allow that. Let’s take the Saturday edition that was referenced. To add one page we would actually have to add four pages. We would need to add two pages in the first section of the newspaper and two more in the second section. Now let’s take a look at the March 22 paper. We had 8 by-line stories (3 on the front page); 24 news briefs; 9 Senior Focus briefs; 9 local photos; local editorial, 3 letters to the editor; local worship directory and ads that are great information from Seussical The Musical to Spring fix up ideas. Readers had both State and National news and sports. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. And just think about it, after that day's paper was published the staff of The Leader-Herald took another 44 blank pages of newsprint and filled it for the next day's reader. It is amazing when you think about it. A brand new product every twenty-four hour period!

I love this business.

Ms. Beck- Print anything but those stock listings in the Sunday paper! If I ever need to look at the stock info, I use the Internet- I would love to see more past-present or future businees stories in the paper

how about putting some money into modern presses that are not sixty years old..

Oh, and one other thought here. When I say business copy, I mean you need a reporter willing to go out and find stories. Dig around. Look well past the Fulton County Chamber, the BID, the Johnstown BPA, etc. Someone willing to go to planning board meetings, check filings for new construction, ferret out rumors about businesses scouting the area (water bottling companies, hotels, car dealerships, etc.), get to know local bankers, report on agribusiness. Heck, if filling space with copy is a problem at that point, then take the AP biz wire, and encourage businesses to send releases about promotions, new hires, etc.

You're a good publisher. You're also a good businesswoman. Find a reporter who is as good at getting out in the community as you are, and then you've got your business reporter.

Pat, IMHO you probably have the better solution in limiting stock quotes. Most folks who are watching individual stocks have access to regularly-updated tickers on the Internet; by the time they get their copy of The Leader-Herald at 4 in the afternoon, it's been 24 hours since the NYSE closed anyway. List the NASDAQ, DJIA, S&P 500, MSFT, IMB, GM, F, DCX, TM, WMT and a few other bluechips.

That being said, I don't believe more wire service stories are the best answer here. You're eliminating business news for other types of news.

I would challenge you that, costs aside, you'd be better served hiring a dedicated business reporter to write local business copy.

I know circulations are down, paper costs have rollercoastered, etc., but this is a case of "You've got to spend money to make money."

Besides, you've moved The Leader-Herald effectively into eastern AND western Montgomery County. This would be one more area where you could offer something The Recorder la

I live in a town where we get a local paper once a week that covers the western end of Montgomery county. They have a section that looks back 20,30 or more years ago that week. It's really interesting. There was a pictorial"Looking Back" section and I loved to look at the pics and remember. They did away with that after the one who compiled it all passed away. I would love to see a Looking back section in the LH. There is a man in Caroga Lake who has a site online. he has pictures from many years 40's 50' 60' 70's . The ones from the 70's bring back wonderful memories. I even found some long lost school friends in them.

Didn't this paper have a weekly section on "The Way It Was" a few years ago? My dad and I used to love that section and tried to see who we knew.

first of all YES THANK you ms. Beck. Love this online edition. Annarondac I agree!!Fulton and Montgomery county are so rich history yet only every once in awhile there may be a little blurb of some happening from the past. Wouldn't it be nice to have a page of "looking back this day in History" or something similar and showcase pictures and articles of the areas past and it's people???. How wonderful would that be? Is it do-able Ms.Beck? Instead of the stock reports?

My tendency is to skip those pages and instead go directly to the back page of that section where there is generally a new business or businesses showcased. I enjoy reading the stories of these entrepreneurs.

I asked my husband, who is active in the stock market, if he looked at the Leader's stock pages. He told me no, that he checks the internet for up to the moment reports.

Running more news items, especially local and state would be a better use of space than market reports. Market news channels and the internet bring up to the minute news on stocks. Our area is rich in history, people and activities. I would enjoy reading more about those topics than looking at rows of numbers. Thanks for the on line new format. I absolutely love it.
