Head Shaking

January 30, 2009 - Pat Beck
You want to know what made me just shake my head this week?

Citigroup Corporation to purchase $50 million dollar jet. Now it is reported that they canceled the deal. Why? Because the press found out, and apparently people cried foul. Don’t trust that it’s not just on layaway and it will resurface.

Woman gives birth to 8! Country responds with ahhhh’s. Then it’s revealed that this “single” mom has six more kids at home. Well, it’s not really her home; she lives with her mom and dad. Her dad, the grandpa is on his way back to Iraq to work and send home dinars. She had the embryos implanted. Come on, who isn’t shaking their heads over this one!

And let’s not forgot former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain, who just resigned. Can’t image why he would leave. Come on all he did was not disclose more quickly Merrill's $15.3 billion in losses for the fourth quarter. Asked for a $10 million bonus for himself and paid Merrill Lynch employees $4 billion in bonuses, normally given in January, in December, before Bank of America closed on the acquisition. And yes, his redecorating skills of spending $1.2 million a year ago to renovate his office and three other rooms, including an $87,000 rug and a $35,000 commode.

A local person, who admits to murdering another human being, finds it necessary to sling vulgarities at the victim’s family.

Yes, my head is a bit weary.

Hi Cathy.

At this point I suspect our lady publisher has developed a classic case of "Fear of Blogging". Say it ain't so, Pat, say it ain't so!

Can we get Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain on the Gloversville School board?

Pat, Why the stop of blogs. You did say this back in early Dec. "I am making an early New Year’s resolution. I will update my blog once a week, probably on Tuesdays. Actually, I believe that this is going to be a much easier resolution to keep, especially since I have given up on the lose weight standard resolution."

Exactly: it's all about re-establishing confidence, and i don't see it coming from these fat spending packages that won't ooze down to the average family.

Who cares what the company does with their money. All I am asking is, if they go under, let them fail. I don't see how propping up failing businesses is the responsibility of the tax payer. Just like the federal gov't has no right to contribute to education and spends 78 billion now and over 160 billion when Obama's stim pack is signed, it has no right to use tax payer money to own a bank, car manufacturer or insurance company. Obama's speech was all about control. An attack on Capitalism. What the country needs is confidence that they will be rewarded if they invest. How about a capital gains tax cut for starters?

Agreed. It must be hard for her to crochet. But she does have nice teeth. As for Clo, he's a flash in the pan without a prayer of getting elected. He came around one event I was at and looked incredibly uncomfortable pretending he wanted to meet people.

How come we could not have comments on John Clo? Whats he better than any one else? If any other G`ville people did that, it would have been plasterd all over the front page not to mention the comments!!!! Same with the mayor and all that he`s up to! I think the people have a right to know just what we have here running our city. Stop protecting them, they are what they are. And everyone should know!

Just what is a "spiritual advisor" anyway? Sounds like an AAA counselor who tells you to stay away from spirits.

Mrs. Beck - You know what my mother-in-law used to say? If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention. Let's write a book together - "Common Sense - Revised".

Hey, if all those new borns grow up and become hard working tax payers, that's better than nothing. And BTW, if Citicorp can have a million dollar jet, why can't the Leader at least give its top management a single engine Chessna?

And I think there are also just too many judge shows on TV. There must be ten of them! How about an editorial against that situation.

John Thain... I can only shake my head at how foolish he thinks we all are. He should be held accountable.

As for CitiGroup, again, foolish practices at a time when we are all suffering.

Both the doctors and mother acted irresponsibly in this case. At no time should more than 3 embryos be implanted at once. The medical community should be held accountable for gross misuse of judgement.

Jan-31-09 1:52 PM

but its such talent to have a litter of babies. but make sure to get big publicity, so many generous people like oprah can jump in with praise and freebies. its not adorable, its irresponsible. or is that irresponsibling?

Isn't it remarkable to see the lack of common sense, lack of responsibility, and dysfunctionality at all socio-economic levels. Could it be that the concept of "American Exceptionalism" no longer serves as a base in our educational system??!!

Ms. Beck, You're doing just fine, but maybe a short stint in Florida might be advisable right now. Nothing is as it should be, but you're not responsible. So don't jump.
