Bill's Broadsides

Vocalism 101

The coffeehouse at Dave Gibson and Pam Flint's Fulton Book Co. has been a great contribution to the local cultural scene. The weekly open mic and headlining acts draw small but enthusiastic crowds, and having performed there a few times, I can say the folks really come to listen.

Never been to the Fulton Book open mic? I found a clip on YouTube that documents a recent performance: CLICK HERE

And in case you missed it in today's paper, we ran an item about a singing workshop coming up this Saturday at the bookstore.

Nancy Walker, who will teach the workshop, recently sent us a copy of her CD, "Layers of Rust and Time." It highlights her fine voice and the instrumental skills of many of the Capital Region's top players. Nancy is a former member of the Chicago-area group Sons of the Never Wrong, which is as great a name for a band as any suggested by humorist Dave Barry. Even better than "Wok the Dog," which was the slightly offensive name of an extremely offensive band I knew of in my college days.

Anyhoo, here's the info about the vocal workshop:

Fulton Book Co., 50 N. Main St., Gloversville, will host a workshop for singers at 2 p.m. March 8 with singer-songwriter Nancy Walker of Greenfield Center, Saratoga County. The seminar will teach vocal techniques for performers. The cost will be $10. To register, call the bookstore at 725-7913. Walker is a former member of the Chicago-based trio Sons of the Never Wrong. She has performed at the bookstore and is slated to play in April at St. James Lutheran Church. For more information, see www.fultonbooks.com or www.nancywalker.net.
