Most young adults do not know how to count change

I had several experiences similar to this one. I’m exiting the Thruway (before I got E-ZPass) and my toll was $2.25. I handed the clerk (a recent high school grad) a $5 bill and a quarter. She counted one, and then a second quarter. I then said, “I want three singles!” She had a dumbfound look on her face and than said “ooooh!”

I got the desired result when I was in the second grade. Schools are replacing face clocks with digital ones because the kids (possibly some parents too) don’t know how to read them. Presumably they also don’t know what clockwise or located at 4 o’clock means either. Schools are dropping Latin. I’m all for teaching computer skills, but let’s remember common sense too.
