You wonder how these things begin

“Love in Firenze,” the new musical which began as a staged reading under the title “September Deception” at Colonial Little Theatre in 2009 will have its world premiere April 26-29, at Proctors Theatre, Schenectady.

The two-act musical will be presented April 26, 27, and 28, at 7:30 p.m., and April 28, and 29, at 2 p.m. at The Addy at Proctors.

The show was presented as a staged reading at Colonial Little Theatre on April 17, and 18, 2009. The director was Steve Suriano of Albany, who returns as the director of “Love in Firenze.” Miriam Miller of Northville, a member of the original cast, returns in the role of Maria.

Ed Munger of Schenectady and Herb Weisburgh are the authors of the original musical. Munger composed all of the show’s music, while Weisburgh wrote the lyrics; they wrote the book together.

The lighthearted musical set in the 1980s tells the story of an American family vacationing in Firenze (Florence), Italy, who each find their own romance in the city — with some surprises along the way.

At the play’s heart is an Italian opera singer and her two romantic rivals, one from the American family, the other from Firenze, vying for her affection.

There are plenty of laughs, singing and dancing, twists and turns, along with beautiful, romantic lasting ballads as the characters try to sort out a love triangle and a case of mistaken identity.

The play features Anna Starr of Schenectady and Phil Bruns of Cropseyville, Rensselaer County, in the lead roles of Lucia and Victor; Bill Douglas of Rensselaer as Antonio; Erin Zielinski of Albany as Hilde; Mike Collins of East Berne, Albany County, as Sergio; Miriam Miller of Northville as Maria; and Jaynie Parmenter of Voorheesville High School, Albany County, the 2017 best actress winner of the Proctors High School Musical Theatre Awards, as Victor’s daughter, Amy.

“Love in Firenze” also features a talented group of performers in the ensemble. Playing the show’s music are Tom Aery of Schenectady and Ray Kim of Troy, the musical director.
