Thank you to everyone who participated in tree lighting

On behalf of the St. Johnsville Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank everyone who came out for Sunday Dec. 3, annual community tree lighting. It is a tremendous pleasure when given the opportunity to work with some amazing people and this year’s event was no exception.

Commander Tony Susi and American Legion Post 168, who always provide a warm welcome, got the event started with their late afternoon chili supper. The post smelled delicious and it was nice to see friends and neighbors coming together enjoying some yummy food and warm conversation.

We are particularly grateful to the attention to detail given by the village board and several village departments including Public Works, police, fire and Parks and Recreation. It has been my experience, both as library director and now as Chamber president that the ladies and gentlemen who staff these departments do not have “no” in their vocabulary. Rather, their response is always “What do you need done and when do you need it?”

In addition to several of our hardworking Chamber members, quite a few community volunteers stepped forward to make this event happen. Whether you baked cookies, helped serve, lead the singing, cleaned up, commanded the sticks that toasted the marshmallows for s’mores, or ho ho ho’d your way through a sea of excited children, we very much appreciate your time and talents to make the evening a success.

Finally, all of this work would be for naught if people didn’t come out. Such was not the case. The sidewalk was full and a large crowd encircled the bonfire. I know Santa handed out nearly eighty coloring books so I estimate we had well over two hundred men, women, children and a couple of well-behaved dogs.

It was lovely to see. In coming together one begins to truly understand the magic and miracle that is Christmas.

Happy Christmas to all and may your New Year be filled with much joy.
