Donations pay for repairs

As the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library gear up for their seventh Celebration, I want to thank them for their past efforts in raising money for the library. The community’s support of the fundraising efforts have allowed us to restore the lobby, install better lighting in the circulation desk area, and to purchase comfortable seating in the reading room, child-centered computer stations and seating in the children’s room.

The fundraising efforts have been instrumental in providing the matching funds for the New York state Department of Library Development grants we have received. The grants, combined with the funds raised through the Celebration and other local foundation grants, have allowed us to resolve our basement moisture problems and to restore the masonry on the outside of the building.

None of the money being used for improvements to the library has come from the tax levy.

This fall you will see more progress as we replace some of the windows in the library. The money being spent on replacing the windows is coming from a combination of money raised by the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library in the 2012 Celebration and a grant of more than $200,000 from the state’s Division of Library Development. These windows are in dire need of replacement: many are cracked, they leak cold air in winter and are difficult, in some cases impossible, to open in the summer. We will save the taxpayers’ money by investing in energy-efficient windows while increasing the comfort and security of the building. We will not be able to replace all of the windows this year, just the ones that are the most in need of repair.

So on behalf of our volunteers, staff and thousands of patrons, I wish to warmly thank all the people who worked on or contributed to the Friends’ 2012 Celebration fundraiser and those who are working on this year’s fundraiser for September.

The money you raise is being put to good use and when used in tandem with state grants, has multiplied.
