Richard ‘Dick’ Groshans
Richard “Dick” Groshans, 94, of Johnstown, NY and former lifelong resident of Caroga Lake, NY, passed peacefully on August 30, 2018, at the Fulton Center for Rehabilitation, in Gloversville, NY. He was of the Roman Catholic faith and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Born on April 17, 1924, in Gloversville, NY to Christian and Anna Groshans. He was a graduate of local schools , earning Valedictorian honors and class president. Richard went on to join the U.S. Army in 1943 and proudly served his country in WW II. He received medals while serving which include; American Service Medal, EAME Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal. During his time in the service he attended; Syracuse University and Texas A&M. He was happily married for 64 years to his wife Mary Ponzi, whom he leaves behind. Richard spent his career after the military as a campsite assistant and manager of the family campgrounds at Pine Lake Park. Richard was also the tax collector for the Town of Caroga. He spent 20 plus years as caretaker of Caroga Campsite. Richard was an extraordinary man of many talents and even had ‘hitch hiked’ once across the country.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary; many nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends; Dewaine and Carmen Dutcher his caregiver and friend; Michelle Jones.
He was predeceased by not only his parents, Christian and Anna Groshans; but also his brother, Ray Groshans and Uncle, Joe, whom he spoke so fondly of.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, NY at 11 a.m. for a Rite of Committal.
