Milton ‘Tinker’ Baird Jr.
Milton (Tinker) Baird Jr., 91, of Johnstown, NY, passed away peacefully at Wells Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Tinker was born in Johnstown on November 29, 1926, to Marion Oare Baird and Milton Baird Sr. He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1944. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served proudly during World War II, and again in the Korean Conflict. Tinker began his career as a plumber working with his father, Milton, and later started Brookside Plumbing and Heating, working well into his 80s, with his son, Tom. He also served for a few years as an adjunct professor of Plumbing and Heating at FMCC.
Tinker was active in the community in a variety of ways. In his younger years, he was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA, serving as president at one point. He was also active in the previous United Methodist Church in Johnstown and the Foothills Methodist Church in Gloversville, singing in the choir, in addition to being a member of the Burroughs Nature Study Club.
On November 17, 1951, he married Audrey Hardy, who survives. He is also survived by one son, Thomas Baird; and one daughter, Nancy Brown (Jeff). His six granddaughters were the light of his life, Kathryn Cabrera (Alex), Kelsey Anderson (Doug), Lauren Harris (Dustin), Jill Brown, Taylor Baird, and Sara Brown. And he was blessed to see the births of three great-grandsons, Alec Cabrera, Jack Anderson, and Maxwell Cabrera. His family will always cherish their fond memories at the camp he built in Caroga Lake, as well as annual family trips to Maine. He was predeceased by his parents; his siblings; daughter-in-law, Betsy Baird; and granddaughter, Kate Brown.
Tinker’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Wells House for their exceptionally good care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wells House or St. John’s Episcopal Church — the One Church Street Fund. Calling hours will be held at Ehle and Barnett, 15 N. William Street, in Johnstown from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018. A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 N. Market St., Johnstown at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug 20, 2018.
