John A. Kovarik

John A. Kovarik, age 89, of Spring Hill, Florida (formerly of Johnstown), passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at his residence.

He was born in Johnstown on April 15, 1929, the son of the late John and Anna Riska Kovarik.

John was a class of 1947 graduate of Johnstown High School. He was a Korean War veteran who served for two years in the U.S. Army with one year in Korea (1951-1952) as a Staff Sergeant with the 440th Signal Battalion in the cable repair section. John was employed for over 23 years at GTE in Johnstown. From 1970-1980, he was the communications consultant to the governments of Iran, Egypt, Spain, India, Thailand and Romania. He retired from United Telephone Company, which became Spirit Communications of Florida in 1991. Mr. Kovarik was of the Catholic faith, a life member of Catholic Sokol and VFW.

He is survived by his four daughters, Nancy Pauly (Bob), Debbie Brower (Rich), Elizabeth Motzenbecker (Jim) and Maryann Wolf; one sister, Helen Kovar; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John was predeceased by his wife, Betty Joan Kovarik, whom he married on September 11, 1954, and who passed on April 11, 2004.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018, at Holy Trinity Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown, New York.

Visitation for family and friends will be prior to the Mass on Friday, August 31, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery immediately following the Mass.

Contributions in John’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.
