Anita Walker

Anita Walker

Anita Walker passed away peacefully in the morning hours of August 18.

Born at home in Johnstown on July 23, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Baum) Dovey.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Dorothy (Greenfield), Esther (Aguilera) and Ruth (Finch); and her brother, Leonard Dovey.

She is survived by her two sons, Timothy Jennings (Susan) and Edward Jennings; and her three daughters, Patricia DeVarennes (Bruce), Gail Van Auken (Tim) and Elise Jennings.

In addition, she is survived by her six grandchildren, Kristen Bridges, Katherine Lathery, Taylor Lathery, Elysse Lathery, Timothy Van Auken and Nicholas Van Auken; and one great-grandson, Knox Bridges; as well as her loving nieces and nephews and their families who brought her more joy than they probably know.

As a child of the Great Depression during the 1920s and 1930s, she grew up with un-wavering determination and an amazing work ethic that served her well her entire life. Always independent, she continued working, driving and maintained her own household until her mid-eighties.

Anita grew up during a time when neighbors helped neighbors and generosity was a given. Because of her, her children grew up thinking homes had flower gardens and pets, and that most problems could be resolved with hard work or a conversation around the kitchen table. Her favorite parting phrase was always, “I won’t say good-bye, I’ll just say, until we meet again” — until then, she will be missed.

A memorial service for Anita will be conducted on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.

Memorial visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 25, prior to the service from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, Fonda immediately following the service. In accordance with her wishes, Anita will be cremated and her ashes interred next to her beloved mother.

A reception for friends and family will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
