WIlliam Sohl

Mr. William “Bill” G. Sohl, age 82, of Gloversville, died peacefully Tuesday morning, December 5, 2017, in his home, surrounded by loved ones.

Bill was born on October 4, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of William and Grace Sohl. He attended St. Michael’s School in Brooklyn before he and his family moved to Johnstown, NY in 1947 where he attended St. Patrick’s School and then graduated from Johnstown High School — Class of 1954.

He married the love of his life, Patricia E. McGregor Sohl on January 14, 1956; the two were happily married for 61 years. He and Patricia had two sons, Mark and Jeffrey Sohl, who they loved dearly.

Bill also spent two years in the Naval Reserve between 1956 and 1958. While growing up, he worked at various supermarkets in the area, and was later employed by the Fulton County Highway Dept., where he remained for 30 years, before retiring in 1996 as Supervisor. In addition, he acted as President of the local CSEA Union for over 30 years as well.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Church and was a former member of the Johnstown Moose.

Bill became an avid water skier and spent many enjoyable summers at his family’s camp on Sacandaga Lake, with his wife and children. He was a member of the Drum and Bugel Corps and enjoyed playing music on his horn and also playing “the spoons” — a highly anticipated event at all family gatherings.

Later in life, he loved to go to his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events; he never missed a game. Bill enjoyed life to the fullest; he and Patricia enjoyed their winter home in Florida for 20 years; they vacationed and traveled extensively in their RV motor-home; they saw the countryside from coast-to-coast, and developed many close friendships along the way.

Bill is survived by two sons, Mark Sohl and his wife, Lisa, of Gloversville, and Jeffrey “Jay” Sohl of Syracuse; a sister, Virginia McCoy of Johnstown; three grandchildren, Sara Sohl, Rudolph Sohl, and Connor Sohl; and a great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Sparks.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia E. McGregor Sohl; and also by a sister, Dorothy Sweet.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, December 11, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will also be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe St., Johnstown, with the Rev.
