James F. Canfield

James F. Canfield, 82, of County Highway 107, Fort Johnson, died Sunday afternoon, December 10, 2017, at Mountain Valley Hospice House, Gloversville with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Northville to Vernon and Martha Atherton Canfield and was a 1953 graduate of Northville High School. Jim was a lifelong area resident and also enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

Mr. Canfield was employed as a machinist at GE in Schenectady, retiring in 1990.

Jim was a member of the Perth Volunteer Fire Department, the Loyal Order of Moose in Gloversville, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Johnstown, and the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks in Amsterdam. He was also a member of the Family Motor Coach Assn. and the Fire Assn. of the State of New York.

Mr. Canfield served as an assessor for the town of Perth several years ago.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Martha E. “Liz” Seeley; two brothers, Vernon and Clarence Canfield; and a granddaughter, Jessica Canfield.

Survivors include his companion, Jean Seuling of Fort Johnson; three children, Deborah J. Mills of Fonda, James F. (Laura) Canfield Jr. of Fort Johnson, Jennifer E. (Gary) Tambasco of Fort Johnson; a brother, F.D. “Duddy” (Anna) Canfield of Northville; a sister, Minerva Story of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Joan Canfield of Bainbridge Island, WA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams. Burial will be in Perth Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, in care of the funeral home.
