Alfred E. ‘Butch’ Smith
Alfred E. “Butch” Smith, 66, of Green Street, Mayfield died Tuesday December 12, 2017 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany with his loving family at his side.
He was born in Schenectady on December 16, 1950, a son of the late Alfred and Doris Vysherad Smith and attended local schools. Al lived in Amsterdam before moving to Mayfield in 1997.
Mr. Smith established Al’s Garage in the early 1980s on Forest Avenue, Amsterdam. The business was relocated on Lyon Street in 1987 and is currently being operated by his son, Leroy, following Al’s semi-retirement in January 2017. He was a hard worker and enjoyed helping his customers.
Al was a member of the Good Sam’s Club, the Family Motor Coach Assoc., and the Mayfield Servicemen’s Club. He enjoyed traveling with his RV, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends.
Al was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Darlene Quinn Smith, whom he married on January 12, 1974; a son, Leroy (Stacey) Smith of Amsterdam; two daughters, Crystal (Scott) Rickard of Amsterdam and Shannon Smith of Mayfield; two sisters, Linda Van Antwerp of Perth and Vickie (Rick) Barringer of Fultonville; three grandchildren, Scott Rickard, Jr., and Alexis and Isabella Smith; his beloved dog, Snowflake; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at noon at the funeral home with Rev. Linda Martin, officiating. Burial will follow in Hagaman Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
