Theressa (Tret) Sweet

Theressa (Tret) Sweet was born in Johnstown, NY on August 11, 1928.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Hurbanek) Zilka.

On June 20, 1953, Tret was married to Clarence Sweet Jr. Tret graduated from Johnstown High School in 1946 and Fulton-Montgomery Community College with an associate’s degree in business administration in 1987.

She was employed as stenographer-secretary to the president and vice president of the General Telephone Company of Upstate New York from 1946-1956. She was office manager of the Johnstown YMCA for 26 years, retiring in 1990. While at Y, she was advisor of the Johnstown High School Girls Tri-Hi-Y Club.

In 1966, Tret was given a Life Membership into the New York State Parent Teacher’s Association from the Pleasant Avenue School PTA. She was a former member of the Johnstown Business and Professional Women’s Club and received the Woman of the Year Award in 1989.

She was a lifetime member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol, a member of the former St. Anthony’s Church and the Christian Women’s Society of St. Anthony’s Church. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Tribes Hill, NY.

Since her retirement, Tret enjoyed playing golf, traveling, crocheting towels for her friends, spending part of the winter in Florida and summer vacations on Cape Cod. She also enjoyed shopping, eating out and meeting friends.

She is survived by Clarence, her husband of 64 years; her daughter, Sandra (Gerry) Fiesinger; niece, Margaret (Scott Retersdorf) Houtz; great-nephews, Joseph (Kaye), Daniel (Kate) and Christopher (Jade) Houtz; great-great-nephew and nieces, Liam, Parker and Lizzie Houtz; uncle, Paul Joseph; dear cousins, Marie (Greg) Wojeski, Linda Zilka and Michael (Janet) Zilka, cousins; and loving poodle Suzette 4.

She was predeceased by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and David Houtz; and nephew, William Houtz.

Viewing hours will be on Friday, December 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ehle and Barnett Family Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown, NY. A service will be held at 12:15 p.m. with a private family interment to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, NY.
