Carol Telfer Rogers
Carol Telfer Rogers, lifetime resident of Lake Pleasant and Piseco, passed away on July 12, 2017, surrounded by her family and friends.
Born in Englewood, N.J., Carol and her sister Muriel moved with their mother to Speculator, N.Y. in the early 1920s. Carol and Muriel attended the one-room schoolhouse in Lake Pleasant near the current county offices and later went to school in Speculator. Carol attended Wells High School and participated in many sports activities, excelling in basketball. She was fast on her feet and was known for her ability to do cartwheels non-stop around the gym. After graduating from high school, Carol attended Troy Business College with a degree that served her well during her career as banker, treasurer, and general bookkeeper throughout her life.
In her early years, Carol enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and swimming and along with her sister helped their mother, Ann, drive deer to the weekend hunters staying in their mother’s camp on Pillsbury Mountain.
Carol married Leo Rogers on October 28, 1939, and they lived and worked in the Piseco and Lake Pleasant area during all their married life. Together they ran several businesses from Rogers’ Hotel, now the Oxbow Inn, to the Tamarack Theater and Club, Rogers’ Diner, the gas station and general store now known as Casey’s Corner, and Rogers’ Liquor Store. Carol’s accounting and bookkeeping skills and tireless energy were a vital part of these enterprises that supported the community and summer visitors. She was also a lifetime member of the Piseco Volunteer Fire Department.
Carol also devoted decades of service to St. James Major Catholic Church as sacristan and provided support in various other capacities including overseeing the Masses in the summer for the overflow of summer residents in the Piseco area.
Carol also served as Piseco Common School treasurer for over 30 years and the school tax collector for 50 years. The books were always perfectly balanced and as tax collector, Carol would call and encourage anyone in danger of missing the tax deadline to stop by and pay their taxes to avoid any penalties.
Carol leaves behind two daughters, Ginger Rogers of Washington, DC and Terry (Phil) Rogers Matthews of Greenwich, CT. She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel Benson, whom she missed greatly over the past four years. She stayed very close to her nieces, Rose Ann Beaudoin of Piseco and Anne Hallock of Los Angeles and her nephew, Henry Rogers of Lake Pleasant throughout her life. They provided continued love and support during her lifetime, especially when her daughters were living far away for many years.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. James Major Catholic Church in Lake Pleasant. Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday evening, July 18, 2017, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at St. James Major Catholic Church in Lake Pleasant.
