Ingbret A. ‘Bret’ Klausen

Ingbret A. “Bret” Klausen passed away on November 20, 2015, at home with his family there comforting him in his final hours.

Bret was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 3, 1935, the second child and only son of Alf Klausen of Norway and Margaret Reid of County Monaghan, Ireland. He was raised in a devout Catholic household and attended parochial schools in Brooklyn. After graduating from high school, he entered the Army and worked with heavy machinery for the Corps of Engineers. After his military service, he returned home to Brooklyn where he worked several jobs over the next few years.

After joining the New York State Police in 1962, he moved with his wife and son to upstate New York living in the Montgomery County area. He spent his career of 26 years at Troop G, SP Fonda, retiring in 1988. He had many friends in his brother troopers and he maintained that friendship through the rest of his life.

His greatest love was that for his family. All who knew him said that he always put his children above all else. Even after the addition of two stepchildren, he doted over them and provided for them without distinction. This love for family continued without variation with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he adored. He was truly a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 34 years; his sister, Eileen Popino of Long Island; his son, Michael and partner Aleks Stojanovic of Ravena; daughters, Karen Williams and companion, Matt Darbin of Edinburg, Eileen Spannbauer and husband David of Meco, Laura Klausen of Johnstown; stepdaughter, Sylvia McCullers and husband Randy of Johnstown; and stepson, Richard Pettit and wife Mary of Johnstown; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2015, at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, with the Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak officiating.

Memorial visitation for family and friends will be on Monday prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Johnstown Cemetery.
