Beech-Nut starts new apprenticeship program

AMSTERDAM — To help fill the skills gap that some companies are facing, Beech-Nut Nutrition is launching a New York state Registered Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program to develop electro-mechanical technicians.

An electro-mechanical technician uses mechanical technology and knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits. They operate, test and maintain robotic, unmanned, automated or electromechanical equipment. They work along side mechanical and electrical engineers and in various industrial environments to include plastics, energy, computer, communications equipment manufacturing, and aerospace.

“The development of Beech-Nut Nutrition’s apprenticeship program has been a collaborative effort between government, education and industry partners,” said Chris Darling, director of engineering.

According to a news release, the apprenticeship program combines supervised on-the-job training at Beech-Nut, and related classroom instruction through State University of New York.

“MVCC is pleased to be part of the solution for Beech-Nut Nutrition to fill the skills gap that many companies are experiencing in this economy,” said Franca Armstrong, vice president of Workforce Development for MVCC. “We are always working toward building the skills of incumbent workers in our region and providing them with a skill set that will increase their ability to earn more. That’s exactly what this apprenticeship program with Beech-Nut will do.”

The program will facilitate the transfer of knowledge from mentor to apprentice, according to the news release. “This program will use a proven method of career-training built on a strong partnership between businesses, technical colleges and the government. IT is truly a win-win for both the apprentice and the employer,” Darling said.

Beech-Nut Nutrition’s Apprenticeship Program is funded in part through grants from SUNY, the American Apprenticeship Initiative Grant and the Workforce Development Institute.

Beech-Nut Nutrition has been a baby food production company since 1931. The company has built itself on a history of innovation and has been dedicated to providing healthy, wholesome infant nutrition products.

The baby food company, which has its headquarters in Amsterdam, is a leading baby food brand in the United States.

According to the release, in 2015 Beech-Nut was awarded product of the year in the baby food category by the Consumer Survey of Product Innovation.
