Water main break on South Main Street

City water and public works staff are struggling to contain and fix a water main break on South Main Street between Broad Street and Woodside Avenue Saturday after being notified of a leak at a nearby fire hydrant about 9:30 a.m. Water is gushing from an underground valve that "blew apart," said Alvin Hichems of the water department, who is shown at the scene. He said crews are trying to reduce the water flow by pumping and shutting off valves on other streets to isolate the break so the valve can be replaced. He said, as of 8 p.m. Saturday, workers have prevented residents from losing water pressure. Hichems said the break was most likely due to aging infrastructure and frost.
