Jeff Smith announces choice for undersheriff
Smith chose Carl Rust, a 30-year veteran of the Amsterdam Police Department as undersheriff should he be elected, according to a press release.
“As a candidate for sheriff, I believe it is important for our constituents to know who their leadership team will be come January if elected,” Smith states in the release. “The sheriff and undersheriff work together to provide leadership within the agency, develop programs and protocol, ensure that our residents, students and visitors are safe, and direct staff so that emergencies are handled in a timely fashion resulting in an effective partnership with our communities.”
Smith is running against James Glorioso Jr. for the position of sheriff. The general election will be Nov. 6.
Rust — who has worked for the Amsterdam Police Department for 30 years — has been sergeant since 1999. In addition to his oversight and supervisory responsibilities within the department, he has been involved with the K-9 unit for 24 years. He is responsible for the training and selection process of the K-9 unit.
Rust is a certified police instructor and a certified member of the dive team. He as also completed drug interdiction school, narcotic identification training as well as ethical training and awareness.
Rust has extensive experience within the law enforcement community having served two years as a correction officer, 20 years as a social services fraud investigator, four years as a loss prevention officer in non-governmental setting and two years for private security. He has also received numerous letters of commendation, a Valor Award, a Legislative Resolution for heroism and a Certificate of Recognition from the mayor’s office.
“With Carl’s vast experience, ability to adapt and willingness to learn, I am confident he will be a great undersheriff and an invaluable asset to staff and members of our community,” Smith said in the release. “I look forward to him being on our team and serving in such an important and instrumental position.”
Smith said he has had a long working relationship with Rust and both made an agreement years ago to work together if Smith were elected as sheriff. He said they have talked of their plans as sheriff and undersheriff.
“I am honored to have been chosen by Jeff to be his undersheriff. Jeff is one of the most dedicated, hardworking, and honest individuals I know,” Rust said in the release. “I look forward to serving in this capacity. My time in Amsterdam and professional experience throughout Montgomery County will allow me to provide quality leadership as undersheriff.”
